Questions travellers ask
Good to know
Is January a good time to visit Nepal?
January is cold and clear. Kathmandu mornings drop close to freezing, but days are sunny and the mountains are often sharp from Pokhara and Dhulikhel. The Terai is pleasant at midday, though dense fog can sit over Chitwan and Lumbini until late morning and delay flights. High trekking routes are snowbound and many Khumbu lodges thin out. It is a quiet, good-value month for the valley, Pokhara and the jungle.
What is the weather like in Nepal in January?
Kathmandu 2–18 °C, dry, frosty mornings. Conditions differ by altitude and coast, so check the forecast for each stop a week before you travel.
Where should we go in Nepal in January?
We suggest Chitwan, Pokhara, Dhulikhel. Pack a down jacket for Kathmandu evenings; our hotels heat rooms, but temples and squares are open to the air.
