Dhulikhel

A Himalayan view and a wellness retreat an hour from Kathmandu

Dhulikhel is an old Newar town at about 1,550 m on the valley rim, 30 km east of Kathmandu. On clear days its ridge looks along the Himalaya from Langtang to Gaurishankar. We suggest two nights at Dwarika's Resort Dhulikhel for its wellness programme, the Namobuddha monastery and the old town of Panauti.

Dhulikhel sits on a ridge just beyond the eastern rim of the Kathmandu Valley, at about 1,550 m, on the Araniko Highway that leads on towards Tibet. The drive from Kathmandu is about 30 km, 1 to 1.5 hours through Bhaktapur. Its old Newar bazaar of brick houses and small temples is still intact, but most travellers come for the view. On clear days the Himalaya stretches across the northern horizon from the Langtang range to Gaurishankar, a line of snow peaks that the valley floor never shows.

The town works well as a quieter counterweight to Kathmandu. The air is cleaner, the nights are dark and still, and walking paths lead out through terraced fields and pine woods to villages and monasteries. The best known is Namobuddha, about 40 minutes by road or a half-day walk, where legend tells that the Buddha, in a former life, gave his body to a starving tigress. Panauti, about 7 km to the south, is one of the best preserved small Newar towns in Nepal, with temples at the meeting of two rivers.

We suggest two nights, usually at Dwarika's Resort Dhulikhel, which focuses on wellness through yoga, meditation, spa treatments and its own organic farm. It suits the start of a journey, to recover from travel, or the end, before the flight home. Views are clearest from October to December and in February and March; from June to September cloud usually hides the mountains. Bhaktapur, about 17 km west, is easy to visit on the drive in or out, which saves a separate day trip.

Highlights

What Dhulikhel does best

Himalayan sunrise from the ridge

On clear mornings, the first light reaches the snow peaks from Langtang to Gaurishankar before it touches the valley below. We walk or drive a few minutes to a viewpoint above the town with hot tea. October to December and February to March give the best chance of a cloudless horizon.

Namobuddha monastery

The Thrangu Tashi Yangtse monastery stands on a ridge above the pilgrim site where, legend says, a prince offered his body to a starving tigress. Prayer flags cover the hill, and visitors may sit in on chanting. It is about 40 minutes by car or a half-day walk from Dhulikhel.

Panauti old town

A small Newar town about 7 km away at the meeting of the Roshi and Punyamati rivers, with the Indreshwar Mahadev temple, carved houses and quiet lanes. It sees few visitors compared with Bhaktapur, and a walk around it takes two to three hours at an easy pace.

Wellness at Dwarika's Resort

The resort's programme brings together yoga, meditation, spa treatments and food from its own organic farm. Guests can join a session or two, or follow a longer plan built with the resort's team. The quiet, the clean air and the mountain view make it a natural place to rest.

Walks through terraced hills

Paths lead from Dhulikhel through terraced fields, pine woods and Tamang and Newar villages. Walks range from an hour to a full day, with the car meeting you at the far end. Our guide chooses the route to suit your pace and the weather on the day.

Dhulikhel's old bazaar

Behind the newer roadside town lies the old Newar quarter, with brick houses, carved windows, stone water spouts and small temples. An hour's walk with a guide shows a working market town rather than a museum, and very few visitors find their way into it.

Getting there

How to reach Dhulikhel

Air

Fly into Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM), Kathmandu. Dhulikhel is about 30 km east, 1 to 1.5 hours by private car through Bhaktapur. Some guests drive straight to Dhulikhel on arrival to begin with a few quiet days, then return to Kathmandu for the city sights.

Road

From central Kathmandu, Dhulikhel is about 30 km along the Araniko Highway, 1 to 1.5 hours depending on traffic in the valley. From Bhaktapur it is about 17 km, 30 to 45 minutes. Pokhara is about 230 km and 7 to 9 hours away, so most travellers fly there from Kathmandu instead.

On foot

For keen walkers, Dhulikhel can be reached on foot from Nagarkot along a ridge in about 5 to 6 hours, through villages and forest. The car carries your luggage, and we arrange the walk in the dry months from October to April, with a guide throughout.

Where to stay

Rooms we book

Dwarika's Resort Dhulikhel is our choice, a wellness retreat on a hillside facing the Himalaya, with yoga, meditation, spa treatments and an organic farm that supplies its kitchen. The grounds are quiet and spacious, and the resort is the main reason most of our guests come to Dhulikhel at all. Other hotels in the town are simpler, mid-range lodges along the ridge. Nagarkot, to the north, has hotels of its own and a slightly higher view, but none we would choose over Dwarika's for a stay of two or three nights in this part of the valley rim.

From our planners

Five things to know

  1. Set an alarm for sunrise on your first clear morning, as cloud often builds by mid-morning and may not lift again that day.
  2. Bring warm layers from November to February, when nights on the ridge can drop close to 0 °C.
  3. Book spa treatments and yoga sessions at Dwarika's Resort Dhulikhel ahead in the busiest months, October, November and March.
  4. Dress modestly and walk clockwise at Namobuddha, and ask before photographing monks.
  5. Visit Bhaktapur on the drive in or out, as it lies on the same road and saves a separate day trip from Kathmandu.

Questions travellers ask

Questions about Dhulikhel

How far is Dhulikhel from Kathmandu?

Dhulikhel is about 30 km east of Kathmandu on the Araniko Highway, which takes 1 to 1.5 hours by private car depending on traffic in the valley. The route passes Bhaktapur, about 17 km before Dhulikhel, so many guests stop there on the way. From Tribhuvan International Airport the drive takes about an hour.

Is Dhulikhel worth visiting?

Yes, especially for travellers who want calm after Kathmandu. Dhulikhel offers a wide Himalayan view on clear days, a wellness retreat at Dwarika's Resort Dhulikhel, country walks, the Namobuddha monastery and the old town of Panauti, all within an hour. It is also close enough to Kathmandu to work as the first or last stop of a journey.

How many nights should I spend in Dhulikhel?

Two nights for most guests: one full day for Namobuddha and Panauti, and mornings for the sunrise view and rest. Three nights suit a wellness break at Dwarika's Resort Dhulikhel. One night is possible, but you may miss the view if cloud sits on the mountains that morning. Our festival-season journey spends two nights here.

What is the best time to visit Dhulikhel?

October to December is best, with clear skies, mountain views at dawn and comfortable days. February and March are also good, with warmer days and rhododendrons on the hills. April and May are warmer but hazier. June to September is the monsoon, when cloud hides the Himalaya and paths are muddy, though the resort remains a calm place to stay.

Is Dhulikhel cold in winter?

Days in December and January are usually sunny and mild, in the mid-teens °C, but nights on the ridge can drop close to 0 °C. Bring warm layers, a hat and gloves for early sunrise walks. Winter mornings are often the clearest of the year, so the cold is a fair trade for the view of the Himalaya.

What is there to do in Dhulikhel?

Watch sunrise over the Himalaya, walk to Namobuddha monastery, explore the old Newar towns of Dhulikhel and Panauti, and take country walks through terraced hills. Bhaktapur and Nagarkot are within an hour. At Dwarika's Resort Dhulikhel, yoga, meditation, spa treatments and meals from the organic farm fill slower days. Two full days cover the main excursions.

Which is the best hotel in Dhulikhel?

Dwarika's Resort Dhulikhel is the finest place to stay in the area and the hotel we use. It is a wellness retreat facing the Himalaya, with yoga, meditation, a spa and an organic farm that supplies its kitchen. Other hotels in Dhulikhel are simpler mid-range lodges. Book early for October, November and March, the busiest months.

Is Dhulikhel at high altitude?

No. At about 1,550 m, Dhulikhel is only slightly higher than Kathmandu, which sits at 1,400 m, and altitude sickness is not a concern. You may feel a little short of breath on steep walks if you are not used to hills. Nights are cooler than in Kathmandu, so pack a warm layer in every season except the monsoon.

Can I go from Dhulikhel to Pokhara or Chitwan directly?

By road, yes, but it is a long day. Pokhara is about 230 km and 7 to 9 hours away, and Chitwan about 195 km and 6 to 7 hours. Most guests drive back to Kathmandu, 1 to 1.5 hours, and take a short flight of about 25 minutes to Pokhara or Bharatpur. Domestic schedules change; check current status before you travel.
