Four nights in Varanasi around Kartik Purnima, when the ghats are lined with lamps for Dev Deepawali. Stay on the river at BrijRama Palace, watch from a reserved private boat, hear classical music at the Ganga Mahotsav and spend the quieter days on dawn boats, in the old city and at Sarnath.
Fifteen days after Diwali, on the full moon of Kartik, Varanasi lights its entire river front. Hindu belief holds that the gods come down to bathe in the Ganges on this night, and from dusk every step of every ghat is lined with clay lamps, with a grand aarti at Dashashwamedh and fireworks over the water. It is the most beautiful night of the year in the city, and the most crowded.
Planning makes the difference. We reserve rooms at BrijRama Palace on Darbhanga Ghat, so road closures do not matter, and book a private boat months ahead. The days around the festival are calmer, with the Ganga Mahotsav concerts in the evenings and time for dawn rides, the old city and Sarnath. Dates follow the lunar calendar; check current status before you travel.

Questions travellers ask
Good to know
When is Dev Deepawali?
Dev Deepawali falls on Kartik Purnima, the full moon about fifteen days after Diwali, usually in November and occasionally in late October. The date is set by the lunar calendar each year. Check current status before you travel and book as early as possible.
Why stay at BrijRama Palace for Dev Deepawali?
Because it is on Darbhanga Ghat. On the festival evening, roads near the river close and crowds make movement slow. Staying on the ghats means you board your boat from the palace steps and return the same way, avoiding the crush.
How early should I book for Dev Deepawali?
Six months or more ahead. Ghat-side hotels and good private boats sell out early, and prices rise sharply in the final weeks. We begin planning November journeys in the spring and confirm the boat as soon as the date is fixed.
Is Dev Deepawali very crowded?
Yes. Hundreds of thousands of people come to the ghats and the river is packed with boats. With a reserved private boat, a guide and a hotel on the ghats, it is manageable and safe. Avoid walking along the crowded steps after dark unless you want the experience.
What is the Ganga Mahotsav?
The Ganga Mahotsav is a festival of classical music and dance on the Varanasi ghats, organised by Uttar Pradesh tourism in the days leading up to Dev Deepawali. Programmes are announced shortly before the festival; check current status before you travel.
Can I combine Dev Deepawali with Agra?
Yes. November is an excellent month for the Taj Mahal, and Agra can be added before or after, via a flight from Delhi or a drive through Lucknow. We plan the Varanasi nights around Kartik Purnima and build the rest around them.
Is Dev Deepawali suitable for children?
Yes, from a boat. Children usually love the lamps and fireworks, and the boat keeps them away from the crowds on the ghats. Bring warm layers, as November evenings on the river are cool, and life jackets are provided. Keep small children close when boarding and leaving boats.
What should I photograph at Dev Deepawali?
The lamp-lit ghats from the river at dusk, the aarti at Dashashwamedh and the reflections on the water. A fast lens helps in low light, and a boat gives a steady enough platform at anchor. Tripods are impractical on crowded boats.
Are there fireworks at Dev Deepawali?
Usually, yes, along with laser and light shows in some years. Arrangements vary each year and depend on local authorities. The lamps along the ghats remain the main spectacle, and they are present every year. Check current status before you travel, as rules on fireworks change.
