Gangtok

Sikkim's ridge-top capital, facing the Kanchenjunga range

Gangtok, Sikkim's capital at about 1,650 m, is 4.5 hours by road from Bagdogra airport. It is the base for Rumtek Monastery, Tsomgo Lake and the road north to Lachung. Visit October to December or March to May for mountain views, and stay three nights at Taj Guras Kutir, Mayfair or the Elgin Nor-Khill.

Gangtok runs along a steep ridge above the Ranikhola valley in east Sikkim, with the snow peaks of the Kanchenjunga range rising to the north-west on clear days. Until 1975 it was the capital of the kingdom of Sikkim, ruled by the Chogyals, and the royal palace, chapel and institutes of Buddhist learning still stand on the upper ridge. Today it is a tidy, busy town, with a pedestrian main street and a population of Nepali, Bhutia and Lepcha heritage.

For travellers it is the hub of Sikkim. From Gangtok, day trips reach Rumtek, the great monastery of the Karma Kagyu school, the high lake of Tsomgo near the Tibetan border, and, for Indian citizens, the pass at Nathu La. The road north up the Teesta to Lachung and Yumthang starts here, and the road west to Pelling and the monasteries of west Sikkim.

Sikkim has some of the most polished hotels in the North East, and most are in or around Gangtok. We base guests at Taj Guras Kutir, Mayfair Spa Resort or the historic Elgin Nor-Khill, and plan days around the light: mountain views at dawn, monasteries in the morning, markets and cafes in the evening. Foreigners need a Restricted Area Permit, arranged at entry.

Highlights

What Gangtok does best

Rumtek Monastery

About 24 km from Gangtok, Rumtek is the largest monastery in Sikkim and the seat in exile of the Karma Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism, rebuilt in the 1960s by the 16th Karmapa. Its main hall, courtyard and golden stupa reward a quiet morning visit.

Tsomgo Lake

At about 3,750 m, 38 km from Gangtok on the road to Nathu La, Tsomgo is a glacial lake sacred to Sikkimese Buddhists, frozen in winter and ringed by rhododendrons in spring. A permit is required for Indians and foreigners, arranged through a registered operator.

The royal ridge

On Gangtok's upper ridge stand the palace of the former Chogyals, the royal chapel of Tsuklakhang and the Namgyal Institute of Tibetology, with its museum of thangkas, manuscripts and ritual objects. Together they tell the story of the Sikkim kingdom.

Kanchenjunga at dawn

From viewpoints such as Tashi View Point and Ganesh Tok, and from many hotel terraces, the Kanchenjunga range fills the north-western horizon at sunrise between October and April. The world's third-highest mountain is about 75 km away in a straight line.

Evenings on MG Marg

Gangtok's main street is pedestrianised, clean and lined with shops, cafes and bakeries. In the evening, locals stroll and gather, and it is the best place to try momos, thukpa and Sikkimese dishes and shop for tea, thangkas and woollens.

Getting there

How to reach Gangtok

Air

Bagdogra (IXB), near Siliguri in West Bengal, has flights from Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Guwahati, and is about 4.5 hours from Gangtok by road. Pakyong (PYG), about 30 km from Gangtok, has had intermittent flights that are often disrupted by weather. Check current status before you travel.

Rail

New Jalpaiguri (NJP), near Siliguri, is the nearest major station, about 4.5 hours away, with trains from Delhi, Kolkata and Guwahati. A railway to Rangpo on the Sikkim border is under construction.

Road

NH-10 follows the Teesta valley from Siliguri to Rangpo, where foreigners obtain or show their Restricted Area Permit, and climbs to Gangtok, about 125 km and 4.5 hours. Landslides frequently disrupt NH-10, especially from June to September; alternative routes add time. Check current status before you travel.

From our planners

Five things to know

  1. Foreigners need a Sikkim Restricted Area Permit, free and issued at Rangpo, Bagdogra or online; check current status before you travel.
  2. Tsomgo Lake and North Sikkim need extra permits through a registered operator, applied for at least a day ahead.
  3. Plan mountain viewing for dawn; cloud usually builds by 10 am.
  4. Gangtok's roads are steep and congested; your driver will drop you near MG Marg rather than on it.
  5. Sikkim strictly limits plastic; carry a refillable water bottle.

Questions travellers ask

Questions about Gangtok

Do foreigners need a permit for Gangtok?

Yes. Foreign nationals need a Sikkim Restricted Area Permit, which is free and issued at Rangpo on the border, at Bagdogra airport, through Indian missions or online. It is usually valid for 30 days and extendable. Tsomgo Lake and North Sikkim need extra permits. Check current status before you travel.

Do Indians need a permit for Sikkim?

Indian citizens do not need a permit for Gangtok, Pelling or most of south and west Sikkim. Permits are required for protected areas such as Tsomgo Lake, Nathu La and North Sikkim, arranged through registered tour operators. Check current status before you travel.

How far is Gangtok from Bagdogra airport?

About 125 km, or 4.5 hours by road via Siliguri and the Teesta valley on NH-10. Landslides can add hours during the monsoon. Pakyong airport is closer, about 30 km from Gangtok, but its flights are limited and often disrupted by weather.

What is the best time to visit Gangtok?

October to December and March to May. Autumn gives the clearest views of the Kanchenjunga range; spring brings rhododendrons and mild weather. January and February are cold but clear. June to September is the monsoon, with heavy rain and landslides.

How many days do I need in Gangtok?

Three nights is ideal: one day for the town's monasteries and institutes, one for Tsomgo Lake, and one for Rumtek or rest. Add North Sikkim and Pelling for a fuller Sikkim journey of eight to ten nights.

What are the best luxury hotels in Gangtok?

Taj Guras Kutir Resort & Spa, Mayfair Spa Resort & Casino and the Elgin Nor-Khill are our choices. Taj offers polish and quiet, Mayfair space and facilities, and Nor-Khill history and a central location. We choose based on your travel style.

Can I see Kanchenjunga from Gangtok?

Yes, on clear days, especially at dawn between October and April. Tashi View Point and Ganesh Tok are good viewpoints, and many hotels have mountain-facing rooms. Cloud usually builds by mid-morning, so plan to look early.

Is Gangtok good for families?

Yes. Gangtok is clean, safe and well organised, with gentle sightseeing, good food and family-friendly hotels such as Mayfair with its indoor pool. Children enjoy Tsomgo Lake in snow, the ropeway and MG Marg. Mind the altitude at Tsomgo with very young children.

Can I combine Gangtok with Darjeeling?

Yes, they are about 4 hours apart by road. Darjeeling is in West Bengal and outside our North East region, but we can add it to a Sikkim journey on request. Most of our guests prefer to spend the extra nights in Pelling or North Sikkim.
