The road passes Kabi, Phodong, Mangan and the Singhik viewpoint, then enters the Teesta gorge with its waterfalls before the climb from Chungthang to Lachung. Sections have been rebuilt after floods and landslides.

How long is the drive from Gangtok to Lachung?
About 5 to 6 hours for 120 km, plus stops. Road works, closures and convoy timings since the 2023 floods can add time. Leave early and keep a spare day in your plan. Check current status before you travel.
Do I need a permit to drive to Lachung?
Yes. Both Indians and foreigners need a North Sikkim permit, arranged through a registered operator in Gangtok, and must travel in a locally registered vehicle. Foreigners usually need to be at least two travellers.
Is North Sikkim open now?
Access has varied since the October 2023 Teesta flood and subsequent monsoon landslides, with closures and phased reopenings. Conditions change quickly, so we confirm status shortly before travel. Check current status before you travel.
Can I use my own car to go to Lachung?
Generally no. Tourist travel to North Sikkim is in locally registered vehicles arranged through registered operators. Rules are enforced at checkpoints. We arrange a suitable vehicle and an experienced driver.
