Ayurvedic consultation and first treatment

A consultation with a resident doctor at one of the respected Ayurveda retreats south of Kovalam, followed by a first treatment such as abhyanga or shirodhara, as an introduction for guests deciding whether a longer programme is right for them.

Ayurveda in Kerala is a medical system, practised by doctors with a five-and-a-half-year degree, not a spa menu. A good experience begins with a consultation. The doctor asks about your health, medicines, digestion, sleep and stress, takes your pulse in the traditional way and assesses your constitution, described in Ayurveda through the three doshas of vata, pitta and kapha.

Based on that, the doctor recommends a treatment. For a first experience this is usually abhyanga, a full-body massage with warm medicated oil by two therapists working in unison, or shirodhara, in which a thin stream of warm oil flows steadily over the forehead for 30–45 minutes, deeply calming the mind. A herbal steam and rest follow. Treatment rooms are simple, with wooden massage tables called droni.

This introduction helps you decide whether to commit to a full programme, such as rejuvenation over 7–14 days or panchakarma, the classical detoxification, over 14–28 days. We arrange it at Niraamaya Retreats Surya Samudra or Somatheeram, both a short drive from Kovalam. Tell us about any medical conditions and medication in advance.

Questions travellers ask

Good to know

What is the difference between abhyanga and shirodhara?

Abhyanga is a full-body massage with warm medicated oil, usually by two therapists in synchrony, to relax muscles and improve circulation. Shirodhara is a steady stream of warm oil poured on the forehead for 30–45 minutes, used for stress, insomnia and headaches. Your doctor chooses based on your consultation.

Is a single Ayurveda treatment worth it?

As an introduction, yes; it is deeply relaxing and shows what Ayurveda involves. Therapeutic benefits come from daily treatment over at least 7 to 14 days with a diet set by the doctor. Many guests try a treatment first and then return for a full programme.

Are Ayurvedic doctors qualified?

In India, Ayurvedic doctors complete a Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (BAMS), a five-and-a-half-year degree including an internship, and many hold postgraduate degrees. Reputable retreats have resident doctors on staff. Always ask for a consultation before treatment. Ask to see the doctor's qualifications if unsure.
