Wild Mahseer

A group of restored British-era planters' bungalows inside the Addabarie tea estate near Balipara, north of Tezpur. Rooms open onto lawns and tea gardens, the food is home-style Assamese and Anglo-Indian, and Nameri National Park and the Arunachal foothills are less than an hour away.

Wild Mahseer takes its name from the large river fish of the nearby Jia Bhoroli, and it is set within a working tea estate at Balipara in Sonitpur district. Guests stay in heritage bungalows built for tea planters, with verandas, high ceilings and wooden floors, surrounded by lawns, old trees and bushes trimmed to waist height. The atmosphere is that of a private estate house rather than a hotel.

Days are spent walking the estate with a planter, watching plucking in season, visiting the factory and tasting teas, then driving to Nameri for a guided forest walk or a gentle float on the river. Wild Mahseer also makes a well-placed first or last night for the Tawang road, which climbs into Arunachal at Bhalukpong, about an hour to the north.

Why we book it

  1. Original planters' bungalows inside working tea gardens
  2. Close to Nameri and the start of the Tawang road
  3. Home-style Assamese cooking with estate-grown vegetables

Questions travellers ask

Good to know

Where is Wild Mahseer?

It is in the Addabarie tea estate at Balipara, in Assam's Sonitpur district, about 30 km north of Tezpur. Tezpur airport is roughly 45 minutes away, Guwahati about 4.5 to 5 hours by road, and Kaziranga's Central range about 2.5 hours. Bhalukpong, the gateway to the Tawang road, is about an hour north.

When is the best time to stay at Wild Mahseer?

October to April gives dry, pleasant weather and is the season for Nameri. For tea, March to May brings first flush and the start of second flush, when plucking and processing are most active. The monsoon months are lush but humid, with heavy afternoon rain.

Can I combine Wild Mahseer with Kaziranga?

Yes, it is one of our standard pairings. Kaziranga's Central range is about 2.5 hours away, so a typical plan is three nights at a Kaziranga lodge followed by two or three at Wild Mahseer. The tea estate days are a quieter counterpoint to the early safari starts.
