Dwarika's Hotel

Dwarika's was assembled over decades around a collection of salvaged Newar woodwork: latticed windows, temple struts and doorframes, some of them centuries old, taken from Kathmandu houses that were being torn down and restored by the hotel's own craftsmen. The result feels less like a hotel and more like a small Newar town, with terracotta brick lanes, fountains and quiet courtyards. Rooms are furnished with handwoven textiles and carved wood, and the pool is set in a courtyard of its own.
Food is a large part of the stay. Krishnarpan serves a multi-course Nepali tasting menu, from a handful of courses to an extended feast, in a room laid with brass and clay ware; it is the best introduction to the country's regional cooking we know. The hotel also has a spa, a library and a rooftop terrace. Pashupatinath is about 2 km away and Boudhanath about 4 km, so the two great evening rituals of the valley are within easy reach.
Why we book it
- Carved Newar woodwork salvaged and restored in the hotel's own workshops
- Krishnarpan's multi-course Nepali tasting menu
- Close to Pashupatinath, Boudhanath and the airport
Questions travellers ask
Good to know
How far is Dwarika's Hotel from Kathmandu airport?
Dwarika's is about 3 km from Tribhuvan International Airport, usually 10–20 minutes by car depending on traffic at Gaushala and Tilganga. Pashupatinath is about 2 km away and Boudhanath around 4 km. Thamel and Kathmandu Durbar Square are 5–6 km to the west, which can take 30–45 minutes in daytime traffic, so we plan heritage visits for early morning.
What is Krishnarpan at Dwarika's Hotel?
Krishnarpan is the hotel's Nepali restaurant, serving a set tasting menu that ranges from a short version to a long, many-course feast. Dishes draw on Newar, Thakali, hill and Terai cooking, served in brass and clay ware. It should be booked ahead, especially in October and November. Tell us about dietary needs in advance and the kitchen will adapt the menu.
Is Dwarika's Hotel good for families?
Yes, for families with children who enjoy history and space. The courtyards are safe to wander, the pool is popular with children, and the hotel's lanes and carvings make it feel like a museum to explore. It is a quiet, formal hotel rather than a resort with a kids' club, so very young children may find the long Krishnarpan dinner a stretch.
