Varkala attracts yoga teachers from across India and abroad, and the quality varies widely. We work with a small number of experienced teachers who hold recognised certification and adapt sessions to your level, from gentle hatha for beginners to stronger practice. Sessions take place early, at about 7 am, on a quiet rooftop or terrace facing the sea before the heat builds.

After a light breakfast, we take you to an Ayurveda centre with a qualified doctor, holding a BAMS degree, who will ask about your health, diet and sleep and assess your constitution. Based on that, the doctor recommends a treatment. For most visitors on a short stay, this is abhyanga, a full-body massage with warm medicated oil by two therapists working in rhythm, followed by a herbal steam.

This is a taste of Ayurveda rather than a programme. If you are interested in a proper treatment, which takes 14 to 21 days, we can plan a stay at a specialist retreat near Kovalam. Tell us about any health conditions in advance, and avoid heavy meals before the massage. Treatments are separate for men and women, with same-gender therapists.

Questions travellers ask

Good to know

How do I choose a good Ayurveda centre in Varkala?

Look for a centre with a qualified Ayurvedic doctor holding a BAMS degree on site, trained therapists, clean treatment rooms and a consultation before any treatment. Kerala Tourism has a classification scheme for Ayurveda centres. Avoid places that offer massages without consultation. We use centres we have visited.

Is a single Ayurveda massage useful?

A single abhyanga massage is relaxing and a good introduction, but it is not therapy in the Ayurvedic sense. Real treatment involves daily procedures over 7 to 21 days with a diet and routine set by the doctor. For a short visit, enjoy it as a restorative experience.

Are yoga classes in Varkala suitable for beginners?

Yes. We book private sessions with experienced teachers who adapt to beginners, older guests and anyone with injuries. Group classes on the cliff vary in level and quality, so a private session is the better way to start. Tell the teacher about any health issues beforehand.
