Varkala clifftop walk at sunset

A late-afternoon walk with a guide along the red laterite cliffs of Varkala, from Papanasam to the North Cliff and Odayam, with the geology and history explained, finishing at a quiet clifftop spot to watch the sun set into the Arabian Sea.

The cliffs at Varkala are formed of laterite and sedimentary rock laid down millions of years ago, exposed here by the sea. They are the only cliffs of their kind directly on the Kerala coast, and the Geological Survey of India has protected them as a national geological monument. Freshwater springs emerge from the cliff face, and in places you can see the layered sediment and seams of lignite.

We start in the late afternoon at Papanasam beach, below the temple, and climb to the clifftop path. Your guide explains the springs, the history of the pilgrim beach and how the cliff has been changing as erosion and building have both taken their toll. The path continues north past the Helipad and the cafes of the North Cliff to the quieter Black Beach and Odayam.

We finish at a quiet clifftop spot or a cafe terrace for the sunset, which from November to February falls straight into the sea. The walk is about 3 km on a mostly flat path, with some steps between beaches. Parts of the cliff edge have no railings, so we keep to the inner side of the path. A car waits at the far end to take you back.

Questions travellers ask

Good to know

Why are the Varkala cliffs special?

They are the only seaside cliffs of this type on the Kerala coast, made of laterite and sedimentary rock and protected as a national geological monument by the Geological Survey of India. Natural springs flow from the cliff face. They give Varkala a dramatic setting quite unlike Kerala's flat palm-lined beaches.

Is the Varkala cliff path safe?

Yes in daylight if you stay on the inner side of the path. Many sections have no railings, and erosion has made some edges unstable. Take extra care after dark, after rain and with children. We walk with a guide and avoid the narrowest stretches.

When is sunset best at Varkala?

From November to February, when the skies are clear and the sun sets directly into the sea. Sunset is around 6 to 6.30 pm in these months. In the monsoon season, clouds usually cover the horizon. Arrive at your spot 30 minutes before sunset for the best light on the cliffs.
