Boat to Pathiramanal island

A private boat across Vembanad to Pathiramanal, a small wooded island in the middle of the lake, for a short walk under the trees with a naturalist, good birdwatching, and wide views back over the water to Kumarakom and the far shore.

Pathiramanal, which means sand of midnight, is a small island in Vembanad between Kumarakom and Muhamma. Local legend says it rose from the lake one night. Today it is an uninhabited patch of trees and reeds with a footpath around it, managed by the state tourism department. The boat ride from a Kumarakom resort jetty takes about 30 minutes across open water.

The walk around the island takes under an hour. Herons, egrets, cormorants and darters roost in the trees, and kingfishers, bee-eaters and occasional birds of prey are often seen. Winter brings migratory ducks and waders to the reed beds. The real pleasure is the stillness and the view back across the lake, with fishing canoes and the occasional houseboat in the distance.

We go in the morning when it is cooler and the birds are active, and take a picnic breakfast on the boat. Facilities on the island are limited, and access rules and timings change, so check current status before you travel. Combine it with a slow cruise along the lake shore on the way back.

Questions travellers ask

Good to know

How do you get to Pathiramanal island?

By boat only. From Kumarakom it takes about 30 minutes by motor boat across Vembanad Lake, or a little less from Muhamma on the western shore. Most resorts arrange private boats, and houseboats sometimes stop there. Check current status before you travel, as access and timings are set by the tourism department.

What is there to see on Pathiramanal?

A short loop path through trees and reeds, with good birdwatching, especially in the morning and in winter. There are no shops or restaurants, so bring water and snacks. The island is quiet and the views across the lake are the main reason to go.

Is Pathiramanal good for birdwatching?

Yes, particularly between November and February, when migratory ducks and waders join the resident herons, cormorants and darters. Go early with binoculars and a naturalist. Combined with the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary, it makes a good birding morning. Wear muted colours and keep voices low.
