Dawn walk in Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary

The sanctuary covers a compact area of woodland, mangroves and canals on land that was once part of a rubber estate. A path of about 2 km winds through it, with boardwalks and a watchtower overlooking the lake. We arrive at opening time, around 6 am, with a naturalist and a spotting scope, when the birds are most active and the light is soft.
Resident birds include purple and grey herons, little and great egrets, little cormorants, Oriental darters, white-throated and stork-billed kingfishers and Brahminy kites. From November to February, migrants such as the Siberian stork, garganey and various waders arrive, though numbers vary from year to year. In the monsoon months, the trees fill with nesting night herons, cormorants and darters.
Afterwards, a resort boat can take you along the sanctuary's lake edge, where kingfishers perch on the stakes of fishing nets. We return for breakfast by about 8.30 am, before the heat. Opening hours and ticketing are set by the forest department and can change, so check current status before you travel. Bring binoculars and wear muted colours.
Questions travellers ask
Good to know
What is the best time to visit Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary?
November to February is best for migratory birds, and June to August for nesting colonies of herons, cormorants and darters. Whatever the month, go at opening time, around 6 am, when the birds are active and it is cool. By mid-morning, activity drops and the heat rises.
How long does it take to walk the sanctuary?
About two hours at a birdwatching pace on a 2 km path with boardwalks. The walk is flat and easy. Add 30–45 minutes if you also take a boat along the lake shore. Bring water, as there are few facilities inside.
Do we need a guide at Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary?
A guide is not compulsory, but a naturalist doubles what you see. They know where birds roost, can identify calls and carry a spotting scope. Several resorts have naturalists on staff; otherwise we arrange a local birder. Bring binoculars if you have them.
