Muthappan Theyyam at Parassinikadavu

Muthappan is one of the most popular deities of North Malabar, a figure associated with hunters and the poor who is honoured by people of all castes and faiths. His main shrine stands on the banks of the Valapattanam river at Parassinikadavu. Unlike village Theyyams, which follow a festival calendar, the Muthappan Theyyam is performed here every morning and evening throughout the year.
The ritual begins with drums and song. The Muthappan performer, in a striking headdress and make-up, emerges to dance, bless devotees and listen to their troubles, often holding a bow and arrows. Offerings include toddy and dried fish, unusual for a temple. Visitors of all faiths are welcome, and the temple serves tea and boiled lentils to everyone who comes.
The temple is also known for its dogs, regarded as Muthappan's companions and allowed to wander freely. Afterwards, we can take a short boat ride on the river or visit the nearby snake park. Performance timings are usually early morning and evening, but check current status before you travel. Dress modestly and remove shoes.
Questions travellers ask
Good to know
When is Muthappan Theyyam performed at Parassinikadavu?
Every day of the year, usually in the early morning and again in the evening. Exact times vary, and performances may change on festival days. Check current status before you travel. It is the only place where you can be fairly certain of seeing a form of Theyyam on any day.
Can non-Hindus visit Parassinikadavu temple?
Yes. Unlike many Kerala temples, the Parassinikadavu Muthappan temple welcomes people of all faiths and castes, in keeping with Muthappan's character. Dress modestly, remove shoes and follow the queue. Tea and lentils are offered to everyone. Photography rules are set by the temple, so ask first.
How far is Parassinikadavu from Kannur?
About 20 km north-east of Kannur town, roughly 40 minutes by car. It combines well with a visit to St. Angelo Fort or a handloom unit, and with an evening village Theyyam elsewhere in the district. Arrive early for the morning performance.
