Chandor, Loutolim and the Salcete mansions
The great Portuguese-era houses of south Goa's villages

Salcete was one of the Old Conquests, under Portuguese rule from the 16th century, and its landed Catholic families grew wealthy on rice, coconuts and, later, on professions in Goa, Bombay and Portugal. In the 18th and 19th centuries they built great houses in their home villages, with long façades, many windows, ballrooms, family chapels and furniture from Europe, China and Macau. Several are still owned by the descendants of those families.
Chandor, about 13 km east of Margao, was once Chandrapur, a capital of the Kadamba kings, and is now a quiet village around a square. Along one side of it stands Braganza House, two wings of one vast house behind a single long façade of windows. Loutolim, about 10 km north of Margao, has several more houses open by appointment, and the open-air museum Ancestral Goa.
These houses are private homes, not museums. Visits are by donation or arrangement, the owners or caretakers often show you round themselves, and we ask guests to treat them as guests would. We pair two houses with the Rachol Seminary and a lunch at the restored Palácio do Deão in Quepem, where meals are served by reservation.
Highlights
What Chandor, Loutolim and the Salcete mansions does best
Two family wings behind one long façade on Chandor's square. The west wing has a ballroom with a marble floor, mirrors and chandeliers and a library of old books; the east wing has a family chapel with a relic said to be a fingernail of St Francis Xavier.
Several old mansions in Loutolim are open by appointment, each still lived in, with family portraits, carved rosewood furniture and porcelain. The village lanes, church square and paddy are worth a walk in themselves.
A late-18th-century house built by a priest, the Dean of Quepem, on the Kushavati river, restored with its garden. Lunch of Goan-Portuguese dishes has been served by reservation.
Founded in the 16th century inside the walls of an old fort on the Zuari, it is still a working seminary. Its church, cloisters and painted interiors can be seen with permission.
On 6 January, Chandor holds its Reis Magos feast, with three boys on horseback dressed as the kings leading the procession to the church.

Where to stay
Rooms we book
We do not stay in Chandor or Loutolim; we visit from the south Goa resorts. Taj Exotica at Benaulim is about 30 minutes from Chandor, Alila Diwa at Majorda about 35, and The Leela Goa at Mobor about 40. All three make a full mansion day easy, with an afternoon return to the pool. From Panjim and Cidade de Goa, the drive is about an hour, so we combine it with Rachol on the way.

Questions travellers ask
Questions about Chandor, Loutolim and the Salcete mansions
What is Braganza House?
Braganza House is a 17th- and 18th-century mansion in Chandor, south Goa, divided into two family wings behind one long façade on the village square. It is the most famous of the great Goan houses, with a ballroom, a library and a family chapel, and is open to visitors by donation.
How far is Chandor from Benaulim?
About 15 km, roughly 30 minutes by car through Margao or along the country roads. From Cavelossim and Mobor it is about 40 minutes, and from Panjim about an hour.
Can you stay in a Goan mansion?
A few heritage homes in Salcete offer rooms or homestays, but none at the standard of a luxury resort. We usually base guests at Taj Exotica or Alila Diwa and visit the houses by day. For a heritage feel, we can arrange lunch in a private house.
Are the Goan mansions museums?
No. Most are private homes, still lived in by the families who built them or their descendants. Visits are by donation or appointment, and owners often show visitors round themselves. Treat them as you would a friend's house.
How much time do you need for Chandor and Loutolim?
A full day covers Braganza House, a Loutolim mansion, the Rachol Seminary and lunch at Palácio do Deão. If you have only half a day, choose Braganza House and one other house nearby.
Is a Goan mansions tour suitable for children?
Older children with an interest in history enjoy it, especially the ballroom and the stories. Younger children may find the houses fragile and formal. Ancestral Goa in Loutolim is the most child-friendly stop.
When is the best time to visit the Salcete mansions?
From October to March, when the weather is dry and cooler. The houses can be visited year-round, and the monsoon makes the villages very green, but the drive and the walk between houses are easier in the dry season.
Can I take photographs inside Braganza House?
Photography has often been allowed, sometimes with an extra donation, but it is at the family's discretion. Ask before taking pictures, and avoid flash near old paintings and textiles. Some rooms may be off limits.
What else is there to see in Chandor?
Chandor's church square and church, the Fernandes House with its older Hindu-era foundations, and remains of the Kadamba capital of Chandrapur nearby. The village holds the Feast of the Three Kings on 6 January.
