Tales of Luxury

Loutolim's mansions and village lanes

A morning in Loutolim with a heritage guide, visiting one or two of its lived-in mansions by appointment, the village church and square, and the lanes of old houses among the paddy, with an optional stop at the open-air museum Ancestral Goa.

Loutolim is one of the best-preserved villages in Salcete, a cluster of large houses, chapels and fields around a church square. Several families have opened their homes to visitors by appointment, and a visit is as much about the conversation as the furniture: how the house was built, how the family has kept it through emigration and land reform, and what it costs to maintain today.

We arrange visits to one or two houses, typically with a ballroom or salão, family chapel, portraits and collections of porcelain and carved furniture. Between them, your guide walks you through the village, pointing out the architecture of smaller houses, the oyster-shell windows and the stone crosses at each crossroads.

Ancestral Goa, on the edge of the village, is an open-air museum that recreates the trades and homes of a Goan village of the past, with a large laterite sculpture in the grounds. It is good for children and can be added at the end.

Questions travellers ask

Good to know

Which houses can you visit in Loutolim?

Several family houses in Loutolim open to visitors by appointment, and access depends on the families' availability. We arrange visits in advance and confirm the day before. Ancestral Goa, an open-air museum, is open to the public without appointment.

Is Loutolim worth visiting if I have seen Chandor?

Yes. Loutolim is smaller in scale but more of a whole village, with several houses, a church square and quiet lanes. Seeing both gives a fuller picture of Salcete's landed families. They are about 25 minutes apart and fit easily in one day.

How far is Loutolim from Margao?

Loutolim is about 10 km north of Margao, roughly 20 minutes by car. From Benaulim and Majorda it is 25 to 30 minutes, and from Panjim about 50 minutes, which makes it a good stop on the way between north and south Goa.
