Dudhsagar and the Mollem forests
Waterfalls, spice farms and a Kadamba temple in the Western Ghats

An hour inland from Panjim, Goa rises into the Western Ghats, the forested range that runs down India's west coast. Here, on the border with Karnataka, the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary and Mollem National Park together protect about 240 km² of moist deciduous and evergreen forest, home to gaur, sambar, leopards, hornbills and a long list of forest birds.
Dudhsagar, the sea of milk, is a waterfall on the Mandovi river that drops about 310 m in four tiers, with the Londa–Vasco railway line crossing on a viaduct in front of it. In the monsoon it is a torrent; from October to December it is still full and the forest track to its foot reopens; by April the flow thins. Jeeps run on the forest department's terms from Collem, the only practical way in.
We plan this as a long day from the coast. The drive passes the spice plantations around Ponda, where we stop for a walk and a farm lunch, and the 12th- or 13th-century Mahadev temple at Tambdi Surla, the finest surviving temple of the Kadamba period in Goa. Birders can spend a dawn in the Mollem forest instead.
Highlights
What Dudhsagar and the Mollem forests does best
One of India's tallest waterfalls, about 310 m in four tiers on the Mandovi, with a railway viaduct crossing its face. The forest jeep track from Collem ends a short walk from a pool at its foot.
A small black basalt temple to Shiva, built in the 12th or 13th century in the Kadamba period, hidden in forest at the foot of the Ghats. It survived because it was so remote.
Family-run plantations of areca, cardamom, pepper, nutmeg, vanilla and cinnamon under the shade of coconut and jackfruit trees, with a guided walk and a Goan vegetarian lunch on banana leaf.
The moist forest along the Ghats holds Malabar trogons, Malabar grey and great hornbills, flycatchers, woodpeckers and the Goa state bird, the flame-throated bulbul. Dawn walks are best from November to February.
The Londa–Vasco line runs along the face of the falls on a stone viaduct, and passing trains make a classic photograph from the forest track below.

Where to stay
Rooms we book
There are no luxury hotels near Mollem or Dudhsagar, and we visit the area as a long day trip. From Panjim and Cidade de Goa, the drive is about 1.5 hours; from Taj Exotica or Alila Diwa in the south, about 1 h 40 min; from Taj Fort Aguada in the north, about 1 h 45 min. A few simple jungle lodges and resorts operate near Mollem for those who want a dawn in the forest; we suggest them only for keen birders.

Questions travellers ask
Questions about Dudhsagar and the Mollem forests
When is the best time to visit Dudhsagar Falls?
October to January, when the falls are still full after the monsoon and the jeep track is open. February to May is drier and the flow thins. From June to September the falls are at their peak, but the forest track is usually closed; check current status before you travel.
How do you get to Dudhsagar Falls from Panjim?
Drive about 60 km, roughly 1.5 hours, to Collem near Mollem, then take a forest department-approved jeep along an 11 km track to the falls, about 45 minutes each way. A private car with driver handles the road section.
Can you walk to Dudhsagar along the railway track?
No. Walking on the railway line has been prohibited, and it is dangerous, with trains, narrow viaducts and tunnels. The legal and safe way to the foot of the falls is the forest jeep track from Collem.
Is Dudhsagar worth visiting?
Yes, if you combine it with Tambdi Surla and a spice farm. The falls are impressive after the monsoon, and the forest is a complete change from the coast. On its own, the long drive and jeep queues can make it a tiring day.
How long does a Dudhsagar day trip take?
About 9 to 10 hours from Panjim, including the drive, the jeep ride, an hour at the falls, a spice farm lunch and Tambdi Surla. From the south Goa resorts, allow a little longer. We leave at 7.30 am.
Is Dudhsagar suitable for children?
Yes, for children who can manage a bumpy 45-minute jeep ride and a short walk over rocks. The falls, the trains on the viaduct and the spice farm usually make it a favourite family day. Life jackets are compulsory in the pool.
Can you see Dudhsagar Falls from a train?
Yes. Trains on the Vasco–Londa line cross the viaduct in front of the falls and give a close view, especially in the monsoon. Services and stops change, so check current status before you travel.
Are there wild animals in Mollem National Park?
Yes: gaur, sambar, spotted deer, wild boar, leopards and many forest birds, with king cobras and other reptiles. Large mammals are seldom seen on a day visit; birds, butterflies and the forest itself are the main rewards.
Where should I stay for Dudhsagar?
We visit as a day trip from Panjim, Cidade de Goa or the south Goa resorts, as there are no luxury hotels near Mollem. Keen birders can spend a night at a simple forest lodge near the park for an early start.
