Most first visits to India include Delhi, Agra and Jaipur. This journey picks up in Agra, after the Taj Mahal, and goes further. Instead of driving straight to Jaipur, you head south-west to Ranthambore for two nights and three safaris, then up to Jaipur for its forts and bazaars.

From Jaipur, a one-hour flight takes you to Udaipur, saving a long drive and ending the journey on the lakes. It is the simplest way to add tigers and Udaipur to a classic first trip, with no backtracking.

Questions travellers ask

Good to know

Can I include Delhi and Agra in this booking

Yes. We can add nights in Delhi and Agra at the start, with the Taj Mahal at sunrise and a private guide. This journey shows the Rajasthan part from Agra onward. From Agra, day 1 drives about 5 hours to Ranthambore by way of Fatehpur Sikri, so the whole trip runs as one booking, with no backtracking.

How far is Agra from Ranthambore

About 250 km, 5 hours by car via Fatehpur Sikri and Bharatpur. The road is reasonable, and the stop at Fatehpur Sikri breaks it well. You leave Agra after breakfast, spend about an hour with a guide at Fatehpur Sikri, 40 km west, and reach The Oberoi Vanyavilas in the afternoon, ready for the first safari next morning.

Are two nights enough in Ranthambore

Two nights gives three safaris, a fair chance of seeing a tiger. For a better chance, add a third night for five drives. Safaris run at first light and in the afternoon with a naturalist in an open jeep, often in different zones. They are subject to permits, and the main zones close from 1 July to 30 September; check current status before you travel.

Why fly from Jaipur to Udaipur

The drive is about 6.5 hours. The flight takes about an hour and saves most of a day, which is more valuable on a shorter journey. On day 6 you fly in the morning and cross by boat to the Taj Lake Palace in time for lunch and the sunset boat. We book the flight at cost, and schedules change, so check current status before you travel.

What is the best time for this journey

November to March. March and early April are best for tiger sightings while still pleasant. Avoid July to September, when Ranthambore's main zones are closed. Winter days in Jaipur and Udaipur are usually in the 20s °C, but early safaris in open jeeps can be cold in December and January, so bring warm layers. Check current status before you travel.

Can I replace Ranthambore with Bharatpur

Yes, for birdwatchers. Keoladeo National Park at Bharatpur, on the way from Agra, is a famous wetland for winter birds. It could be a stop or a night instead of Ranthambore. Winter, roughly November to February, is the season for migrant birds there. We would then drive on to Jaipur, and the Jaipur and Udaipur nights stay as planned.

Is this a good first trip to India

Yes. Combined with Delhi and Agra, it covers the classic sights plus tigers and Udaipur, without backtracking. The longest drive is about 5 hours from Agra to Ranthambore, broken at Fatehpur Sikri, and a short flight replaces the road from Jaipur to Udaipur. Private guides at Fatehpur Sikri, Jaipur and Udaipur explain the history, and the pace leaves time for rest.

Is the Taj Lake Palace included

Yes, for the three Udaipur nights, in a room category we agree. The Oberoi Udaivilas is an alternative for guests who prefer space and pools. The Lake Palace sits on an island in Lake Pichola and is reached by boat. Rooms book out months ahead for the peak season, so we hold your preferred category as soon as your dates are confirmed.

Is the price per person

Yes, per person, twin sharing, from the figure shown. It excludes the domestic flight, which we book at cost. Single travellers pay a supplement. The price varies with your dates and the room categories at Vanyavilas, Rambagh Palace and the Taj Lake Palace, and rises over Christmas, New Year and Diwali. We confirm a firm quote once your dates are fixed.
