Spice Village

Spice Village sits on the road into Thekkady, a short drive from the entrance to the Periyar Tiger Reserve. The cottages have thick thatched roofs of elephant grass and are spread through gardens of pepper, cardamom, coffee and fruit trees. Inside, they are simple, cool and comfortable, with verandahs facing the gardens.
The resort runs its own nature programmes, including guided walks in the grounds and help with booking Periyar activities, and a naturalist gives talks in the evening. The restaurant serves Kerala and continental dishes, much of it using produce from local farms. Cooking demonstrations and a Kalaripayattu visit in Kumily are easy to add.
Why we book it
- Minutes from the Periyar reserve entrance
- Thatched cottages in spice gardens
- Resident naturalist and nature programmes
Questions travellers ask
Good to know
How far is Spice Village from Periyar Tiger Reserve?
It is a few minutes by car from the Thekkady entrance of the Periyar Tiger Reserve, close enough for the early boat departures and forest walks. Kumily town is also a short drive away for spice shops, Kalaripayattu and Kathakali shows.
Does Spice Village have a pool?
Yes, there is a pool in the gardens, as well as an Ayurveda centre. Facilities can change, so check current status before you travel. Most guests spend the mornings in the reserve and the afternoons at the resort. The pool is set in the gardens.
Is Spice Village good for children?
Yes. The garden setting, the pool, the nature walks and the naturalist's talks suit children, and the cottages are spacious. Children over about 12 who walk well can join bamboo rafting in the reserve, which we book separately. Ask about family cottages when booking.
