The Malabar House

The Malabar House was one of the first heritage boutique hotels in Kerala, created from an old colonial house near Parade Ground and St. Francis Church. The building has thick walls, wooden ceilings and a shaded courtyard with a plunge pool, and the rooms combine antique furniture with contemporary Indian art and bold colours.
Its scale is its appeal: a small number of rooms, attentive staff and a restaurant that serves modern takes on Kerala and coastal cooking in the courtyard. Everything in Fort Kochi is within walking distance. Evenings sometimes include music or dance in the courtyard. We book the larger suites for guests who want more space.
Why we book it
- Intimate, art-filled heritage house
- Quiet courtyard with plunge pool
- Steps from St. Francis Church and Parade Ground
Questions travellers ask
Good to know
Is The Malabar House good for families?
It is better suited to couples and solo travellers. The hotel is small and quiet, the pool is a courtyard plunge pool, and the style is intimate. Families with young children usually prefer Brunton Boatyard or the Taj Malabar Resort & Spa, which have more space.
How far is The Malabar House from the fishing nets?
About a 10-minute walk through the old streets of Fort Kochi. St. Francis Church and Parade Ground are a few minutes away. Mattancherry and Jew Town are about 3 km, a short drive or tuk-tuk ride. Mornings are the best time to walk it.
Does The Malabar House have a restaurant?
Yes, the hotel has its own courtyard restaurant serving Kerala and coastal dishes alongside international plates, with a good wine list. Menus change, so check current status before you travel. Fort Kochi's cafes and restaurants are also within walking distance.
