From Leh, the highway passes Phyang, Gurudwara Pathar Sahib and the Indus–Zanskar confluence at Nimmu, then Basgo, Saspol and Khaltse. Above Khaltse it climbs the steep Hangroo loops to Lamayuru. The road is paved and in good condition. With stops at Basgo, Likir or Alchi, the drive becomes a full and rewarding day.

From Nimmu House, Lamayuru is about 90 km and two hours west. Guests based there can leave early for morning prayers at Lamayuru and return via Alchi or Rizong for lunch and the afternoon. The road is paved and quiet in the early morning, with fine views along the Indus.

How far is Lamayuru from Leh?
About 125 km, around three hours by road along the Srinagar highway. With stops at Likir, Basgo or Alchi, the drive fills a day. Leave early to arrive for morning prayers, or time the visit for the late afternoon light on the moonland.
Is the road from Leh to Lamayuru good?
Yes, it is a paved highway in good condition. The Hangroo loops below Lamayuru are steep, with hairpins, so take motion-sickness medicine if you are prone to it. The road is open most of the year. Winter closures are rare and brief.
Can we visit Lamayuru and Alchi in one day?
Yes, they are about 60 km apart on the same road. Start early, visit Lamayuru in the morning, and return via Alchi for the late morning or afternoon. Likir and Basgo can be added on the way back. It makes a long but rewarding day.
Do we need a permit for Lamayuru?
No. Lamayuru and the Srinagar–Leh highway are not protected areas, so no permit is needed. Check current status before you travel for any changes. Monastery entry fees are paid at the gate, and your guide handles them for you. No paperwork is needed.
