Agra to Mathura and Vrindavan
Your options
Ways to make the journey
1.5 h
The simplest option. Leave Agra at about 7:30 am on the Delhi highway, reach Vrindavan's temples by 9 am, have lunch in Vrindavan and spend the afternoon in Mathura, finishing with the aarti at Vishram Ghat. The return drive takes about 1.5 hours after dark. Holi week brings heavy traffic, so allow extra time.
1 h
Fast trains run from Agra Cantt to Mathura Junction in about an hour, and Vrindavan is 12 km on by road. It works, but a car is needed at the other end, so most travellers drive the whole way. Winter fog can delay morning trains.
Worth a stop
- Akbar's tomb at Sikandra
- Keetham Lake (Sur Sarovar bird sanctuary)
- Government Museum, Mathura
Questions travellers ask
Good to know
How far is Vrindavan from Agra?
About 70 km, or 1.5 hours by car on the national highway towards Delhi. Mathura is on the way, about 58 km from Agra. Traffic can slow the drive around Mathura and during festivals, so we leave early and allow extra time in Holi week.
Can I visit Mathura and Vrindavan in one day from Agra?
Yes. A long day covers Vrindavan's temples in the morning, lunch at ISKCON, Mathura's museum and Krishna Janmasthan in the afternoon, and the evening aarti at Vishram Ghat, returning to Agra by about 9 pm. Temple closing hours in the afternoon shape the plan.
Is it better to visit Mathura from Delhi or Agra?
Either works. From Agra the drive is 1.5 hours; from Delhi it is about 3 hours via the Yamuna Expressway. Many travellers visit Braj on the drive from Delhi to Agra, arriving in Agra in the evening, which saves a separate day.
What stops are there between Agra and Mathura?
Akbar's tomb at Sikandra, on the edge of Agra, is the main one, with its grand gateway and gardens. Keetham Lake, a small bird sanctuary off the highway, is worth a short stop in winter. Mathura's Government Museum is a fine first stop on arrival.
