Jeep safaris for tigers in the sal forest

Drive the forest tracks of Dudhwa at dawn and dusk with a naturalist and a park guide, reading pug marks and alarm calls for tigers, leopards and sloth bears, with few other vehicles around.

Safaris run in two sessions, early morning and afternoon, in open vehicles with a park guide on board. Routes wind through sal forest with tall straight trunks, across grassland patches called phantas and along streams and lakes. In winter mist hangs over the grass at dawn; by March the light is clear and the forest floor is dry.

Tigers are present but Dudhwa is not a park of guaranteed sightings. Your naturalist reads tracks in the dust, listens for alarm calls from chital, sambar and langurs, and waits at waterholes. In three or four days, between March and May, a sighting is reasonably likely but never certain. Leopards, sloth bears, jungle cats and wild boar are seen too.

What makes Dudhwa special is the quiet. On many drives you will meet few other vehicles. We plan four to six drives over three or four nights and keep a flexible pace, with rest in the middle of the day. Permits are limited, so book early.

Questions travellers ask

Good to know

What are the chances of seeing a tiger at Dudhwa?

Lower than in parks like Ranthambhore or Bandhavgarh, because tall grass and dense forest hide tigers. Over four to six drives between March and May, a sighting is reasonably likely but not guaranteed. November to February is better for swamp deer and birds than for tigers. Go for the wilderness, and treat a tiger as a bonus.

When is Dudhwa National Park open?

The park usually opens on 15 November and closes on 15 June for the monsoon, when tracks become impassable. Safaris run in morning and afternoon sessions. Opening dates and rules are set by the Uttar Pradesh forest department and can change, so check current status before you travel.

How do I book a safari at Dudhwa?

Safari permits and forest rest houses are booked through the Uttar Pradesh forest and ecotourism systems, with limited numbers each day. We handle permits, vehicles and park guides as part of our journeys. Book as early as possible for March to May, when demand is highest.
