Tea estate walk and working factory

We leave the hotel at 7 am, when the light is soft and mist still lies in the valleys. The walk follows footpaths through the estates, often on the slopes around Lakshmi or Chokramudi, for about two hours at an easy pace. Your guide explains how tea bushes are pruned to waist height, why plucking happens every 7 to 14 days, and how altitude and slow growth give the high estates their flavour.
You pass pickers at work and the brightly painted lines, or worker villages, with their schools and temples. If you would like to speak with the pickers, your guide translates; many families have worked here for three or four generations. The views open out at every bend, and we stop for a flask of estate tea on a ridge.
Later we visit a working factory, where green leaf is withered in long troughs, rolled, fermented and dried, much as it was in the early 20th century. Factory visits depend on the day's production and permissions, so check current status before you travel. We finish at the Tata Tea Museum at Nallathanni, which explains the history of the Kanan Devan estates, followed by a tasting.
Questions travellers ask
Good to know
Can you visit a working tea factory in Munnar?
Yes, with arrangement. The Tata Tea Museum at Nallathanni has a demonstration processing line open to the public, and some estates allow small guided groups into working factories. Access depends on production and company rules, which change, so check current status before you travel. We arrange the visit through our local contacts.
How difficult is the Munnar tea walk?
Easy to moderate. We choose routes of 4–6 km with gentle gradients on estate paths, taking about two hours with stops. Some paths are uneven and can be slippery after rain, so wear walking shoes. For guests who prefer not to walk far, we drive to viewpoints and walk shorter stretches.
When is tea plucked in Munnar?
Plucking goes on through most of the year, with the heaviest flush during and after the monsoon, from June to September. The best quality leaf is often plucked in the cooler, drier months from December to March, when growth slows. Pickers work in the morning and early afternoon, so morning walks see the most activity.
