Sunrise jeep to Kolukkumalai

A pre-dawn 4x4 ride from Suryanelli up a rough estate track to Kolukkumalai, one of the highest tea estates in South India at more than 2,000 m, for sunrise above the clouds and a visit to its old orthodox tea factory.

We leave the hotel around 4.30 am for the drive to Suryanelli, about 35 km east of Munnar. Here we change into a local 4x4 jeep, as the final 10 km is a rough, rocky track that ordinary cars cannot manage. The ride takes about an hour and is bumpy but safe with the experienced local drivers. The estate itself lies just across the border in Tamil Nadu.

At the top, a short walk leads to a viewpoint where, on clear mornings, the sun rises over a sea of cloud filling the valleys below, with the peaks of the Western Ghats standing out like islands. Mornings at this height are cold, sometimes below 10 °C in winter, so bring a warm jacket. We serve breakfast and hot drinks from a hamper at the viewpoint.

After sunrise we visit the estate's small factory, which still uses orthodox machinery from the early 20th century to roll and dry the leaf. The tea is strong and fragrant, and you can buy it on site. Visibility depends on weather; in the monsoon cloud often covers the view completely. Jeep permits and estate access fees apply, so check current status before you travel.

Questions travellers ask

Good to know

Is the Kolukkumalai jeep ride safe?

Yes, with the licensed local jeeps and drivers who make the trip daily. The track is rough and steep, with loose rock and sharp bends, and the ride is bumpy for about an hour each way. It is not recommended for anyone with back or neck problems, during pregnancy or for very young children.

Is Kolukkumalai in Kerala or Tamil Nadu?

The estate lies just across the border in Tamil Nadu's Theni district, but it is reached only from the Kerala side, via Suryanelli near Munnar. No separate permit is needed to cross the border, and the estate charges an entry fee. Check current status before you travel, as access rules can change.

What is the best season for the Kolukkumalai sunrise?

September to March gives the best chance of a clear sunrise above a sea of cloud. December to February is coldest and clearest. During the south-west monsoon, from June to August, mist and rain often hide the view, and the track can be closed after heavy rain.
