A private evening on the Mandovi

The Mandovi is Goa's working river, and from the water Panjim makes sense: the old customs houses and Secretariat on the bank, the bridges to Porvorim, the barges carrying iron ore downriver in past decades and the fishing boats heading out at dusk. A private boat lets you see all this at your own pace, without the music and crowds of the public sunset cruises.
We leave from a jetty near the city centre about an hour before sunset and run downriver past the Reis Magos fort on the north bank, with its restored walls above the water, toward the Aguada headland and the open sea. Dolphins are sometimes seen near the river mouth in calm conditions.
Drinks and Goan snacks such as prawn rissóis and cutlets can be served on board. We return after dark, with the lights of Panjim and the casino boats along the bank. The trip runs only in the dry season, when the river and the bar at the mouth are calm.
Questions travellers ask
Good to know
Are Mandovi river cruises worth it?
The large public cruises are crowded and loud, with dance shows and music. A private boat is quieter and lets you go further downriver toward Reis Magos and Aguada. We think it is one of the nicest ways to spend an evening in Panjim.
When do river boats run on the Mandovi?
Private boats generally run from October to May. During the monsoon, from June to September, the river is high and the river mouth is rough, and most operators stop. Check current status before you travel.
Can we see dolphins on the Mandovi?
Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins are sometimes seen near the mouth of the Mandovi, off Aguada and Reis Magos, especially in calm morning conditions. Sightings are not guaranteed, and dedicated dolphin trips from Sinquerim or Mobor have better odds.
