Sunset on the Sal river at Mobor

The Sal river rises near Verna and runs south behind the Salcete beaches, reaching the sea at Mobor, where a sandspit separates it from the ocean. Its lower reaches are lined with mangroves and small fishing settlements, and fishing boats moor along the banks at Cavelossim and Betul across the water.
We board a private boat at the Mobor jetty in the late afternoon and run slowly upstream among the mangroves, where kingfishers, egrets, herons and brahminy kites are common, before turning toward the river mouth for sunset. Fishermen mend nets on the banks, and in calm conditions dolphins sometimes surface off the mouth.
Drinks and snacks can be served on board, and the boat returns to the jetty after dark. For an earlier start, the same boat runs a dolphin trip at about 8 am, when the sea is calmest. Both run only in the dry season.
Questions travellers ask
Good to know
Where do Sal river boat trips start?
Most trips start from the jetties at Mobor and Cavelossim, a short drive from The Leela Goa and 20 minutes from Taj Exotica. We charter a private boat rather than joining shared trips, so the timing and route suit you.
Can you see dolphins from Mobor?
Dolphins are often seen off the Sal river mouth on calm mornings from October to April. Morning dolphin trips have better odds than sunset cruises. Sightings are never guaranteed, and we use operators who keep a respectful distance.
Do Sal river boats run in the monsoon?
No. Boat trips generally stop from June to September, when the river is high and the river mouth is rough. They resume after the rains, usually in October. Check current status before you travel.
