Kochi and Marari: a short Kerala break

A five-night break for travellers short on time: two nights in Fort Kochi for the old port's heritage, food and Kathakali, then three nights at Marari Beach, a quiet fishing-village shore 1.5 hours south, with a private day on the backwaters. Ideal as a long weekend or a stopover.

Not everyone has two weeks. This short journey is designed for a long weekend from elsewhere in India, a stopover on the way to the Gulf or Southeast Asia, or a first taste of Kerala. It needs only two drives of about 1.5 hours and keeps the focus on two of Kerala's most rewarding places: the layered old port of Fort Kochi and the quiet beach at Marari.

In Fort Kochi, two nights at Brunton Boatyard on the harbour give time for the heritage walk, Mattancherry and a Kathakali evening. At Marari, three nights in a villa among the palms leave room for the beach, a fishing-village morning, a cycle ride and a private day boat through the backwaters of Kuttanad, 30 minutes away, without the need for an overnight houseboat.

Day by day

The journey

Day01

Arrive in Fort Kochi

Overnight: Fort Kochi≈ 42 km · 1.5 hMeals: Dinner

We meet you at Cochin International Airport and drive about 1.5 hours to Brunton Boatyard on the Fort Kochi waterfront, where every room faces the harbour channel. In the late afternoon, walk to the Chinese fishing nets to watch the crews lower and raise them in the last light, then return for dinner at the hotel.

Day02

Heritage walk and Kathakali

Overnight: Fort KochiMeals: Breakfast

Walk Fort Kochi at first light with a local historian, from the nets through the Dutch cemetery and Princess Street to St. Francis Church. After breakfast, visit Mattancherry's Dutch Palace murals, the Paradesi Synagogue and the spice warehouses of Bazaar Road. Rest through the afternoon heat. In the early evening, watch Kathakali actors paint their faces before an hour-long performance.

Day03

To the beach at Marari

Overnight: Marari≈ 50 km · 1.5 hMeals: Breakfast, dinner

After a slow breakfast on the harbour, drive about 1.5 hours south along the coast to Marari Beach, stopping at the seafront basilica of Arthunkal if you wish. Check in to a villa set among coconut palms behind the beach. The afternoon is free for the pool and the sand, and the evening for a sunset walk.

Day04

A private day on the backwaters

Overnight: Marari≈ 15 km · 30 minMeals: Breakfast, lunch

Drive 30 minutes to a quiet jetty near Alappuzha and board a private covered boat for a day in the canals of Kuttanad, where rice grows below the level of the water, villages line the banks and egrets follow the farmers. Lunch is cooked on board with fish bought from the fishermen. Return to Marari in the late afternoon.

Day05

Fishing boats and village lanes

Overnight: MarariMeals: Breakfast, dinner

Rise early to watch the fishing crews bring their boats in through the surf and sell the catch on the sand. After breakfast, an easy cycle ride through the palm lanes passes temple ponds, churches and a coir-spinning house. The rest of the day is free for the beach, the pool or an Ayurvedic massage.

Day06

Depart from Kochi

≈ 80 km · 2–2.25 hMeals: Breakfast

After a last swim and breakfast, we drive you to Cochin International Airport, about 2 to 2.25 hours away, allowing extra time for traffic. For a late flight, we can stop in Fort Kochi on the way for lunch. Our team in India stays in touch until you are through check-in.

Questions travellers ask

Good to know

Is five nights enough for Kerala?

For a short break focused on Kochi and the coast, yes. You see the heritage of Fort Kochi and the backwaters, and rest at the beach. It does not include the tea hills or Periyar, which need at least four more nights.

Why a day boat instead of a houseboat?

A day boat shows the canals of Kuttanad without giving up a night at your beach villa, which suits a short trip. If you would like the full experience of mooring at sunset, we can replace one night at Marari with a private houseboat.

Is this a good stopover?

Yes. Kochi has direct flights from the Gulf, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur, and from all major Indian cities, so this works well as a stopover. The short drives make it easy to recover from a long-haul flight. We meet you at arrivals at any hour.

Can we add Munnar?

Yes. Two nights in Munnar fit between Fort Kochi and Marari, making a seven-night journey. Munnar is about 4 hours from Kochi and 4.5 hours from Marari, so the extra drive is worth it only with at least two nights there.

Is this short break good for a honeymoon?

Yes, especially with a pool villa at Marari and a harbour-view room at Brunton Boatyard. We can add a candlelit dinner on the beach and a couple's massage. For a longer honeymoon, see our nine-night hills and lagoons journey. Tell us it is your honeymoon.

What is the best time for this trip?

November to March. December to February is driest, with calm seas at Marari. September and October are green with some showers. April and May are hot and humid, and we avoid June to August, when swimming is unsafe. Book December early.

How much does this short break cost?

From about ₹1,45,000 per person, twin sharing, at Brunton Boatyard and Marari Beach, with private car, guide, Kathakali, a day boat with lunch and the activities listed. Pool villas and peak dates cost more. Flights are extra. Prices change by season.

Is this suitable for families?

Yes. Children enjoy the fishing nets, Kathakali make-up, the boat day and the beach. Brunton Boatyard and Marari Beach both welcome families. We can shorten the heritage walk and add a cycle ride with children's bikes. Ask us about family rooms and connecting villas.

Can we do it in reverse?

Yes. Starting at Marari and ending in Fort Kochi works just as well and puts you closer to the airport on the last day, which helps with early flights. The experiences stay the same. Simply tell us your flight times and we will suggest the better order.
