Five nights timed for Holi in Krishna's homeland: three in Vrindavan for Lathmar Holi at Barsana, the flower Holi at Banke Bihari and the main day of colour, then two in Agra at ITC Mughal to recover and see the Taj Mahal at sunrise. Dates follow the lunar calendar.
Holi is celebrated across India, but nowhere with the intensity of Braj, the country around Mathura and Vrindavan where Krishna is said to have grown up. Here the festival lasts more than a week, with each village and temple keeping its own day: sweets thrown at Barsana, sticks and shields at Lathmar Holi, petals at Banke Bihari and colour in every lane.
Vrindavan has no luxury hotels, so we use the best simple hotel available for three nights to be close to the events, then move to ITC Mughal in Agra for comfort and the Taj Mahal. A local guide stays with you on every festival day, arranges vantage points where possible and knows when to leave. Check current status before you travel, as dates change each year.

The journey
Day01
Delhi to Vrindavan
Overnight: Vrindavan≈ 160 km · 3 hMeals: Dinner
Your driver meets you at Delhi airport and takes the Yamuna Expressway south to Vrindavan, about 3 hours. Check in to the best available hotel near the ISKCON temple, simple but clean. In the evening, walk with your local guide to the ISKCON Krishna Balaram Mandir for the evening aarti, and talk through the days ahead: what to wear, how to protect cameras and where we will watch each celebration.
Day02
Lathmar Holi in Barsana
Overnight: Vrindavan≈ 50 km · 1.5 h each wayMeals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Drive to Barsana, Radha's village, on the day of Lathmar Holi. In the morning, visit the Radha Rani temple on the hill as songs and colour begin. In the afternoon the men of Nandgaon arrive with shields and the women of Barsana meet them with long sticks, amid clouds of colour. We watch from a reserved rooftop or balcony where possible, and leave before the lanes become impassable. Return to Vrindavan to wash and rest.
Day03
Flower Holi and the temples of Vrindavan
Overnight: VrindavanMeals: Breakfast, Dinner
A day in Vrindavan's temples. Walk the lanes with your guide to Banke Bihari, where on the festival day petals and colour are thrown at the crowd, and the older sandstone temples such as Govind Dev. Crowds are dense, so we choose the calmer times of day. In the evening, drive 12 km to Mathura for the Yamuna aarti at Vishram Ghat, watched from a rowing boat.
Day04
The day of colour, then to Agra
Overnight: Agra≈ 70 km · 1.5 hMeals: Breakfast, Dinner
On the main morning of Holi, the streets of Braj fill with colour, music and thandai. Join the celebration with your guide near the hotel for an hour or two, then wash and change. Colour play usually ends by early afternoon, when we drive to Agra and check in at ITC Mughal. Spend the evening at the hotel's Kaya Kalp spa and gardens. Exact timing depends on the year's festival calendar.
Day05
The Taj Mahal at sunrise
Overnight: AgraMeals: Breakfast, Dinner
Enter the Taj Mahal by the east gate at sunrise, walking through the gardens and onto the marble platform as the light changes, with your guide. Return for breakfast. In the afternoon, visit Agra Fort and Itmad-ud-Daulah, and finish at Mehtab Bagh across the river for sunset over the Taj. If your sunrise falls on a Friday, when the Taj is closed, we switch the days.
Day06
Return to Delhi
≈ 230 km · 3.5–4 hMeals: Breakfast
After breakfast, drive back to Delhi on the Yamuna Expressway, arriving at the airport or your Delhi hotel by early afternoon. If you have time, we can stop at Akbar's tomb at Sikandra on the edge of Agra on the way out, which is usually quiet in the morning.
Holi dates follow the lunar calendar and fall in late February or March; check current status before you travel.
Hotels in Vrindavan are simple and vegetarian, often without alcohol.
Wear old cotton clothes and protect cameras with rain covers; colours can stain.
Crowds at Barsana and Banke Bihari are very dense; children and frail travellers may prefer to watch from a distance.
Questions travellers ask
Good to know
When is Holi in Braj?
Holi falls on the full moon of Phalgun, in late February or March, and Braj celebrates for more than a week before and after. Lathmar Holi in Barsana is usually five or six days before the main day. Dates follow the lunar calendar and change each year; check current status before you travel.
Is Holi in Braj safe for foreign visitors?
It can be, with planning. Crowds are dense and some men behave badly, especially towards women. We keep a guide with you at all times, use vantage points off the street where possible and leave before the busiest moments. Calmer temple celebrations are a good option for families.
Where will we stay in Vrindavan?
Vrindavan has no luxury hotels. We use the best simple hotel available, with clean rooms and vegetarian food, close to the events. Alcohol is usually not served. After three nights we move to ITC Mughal in Agra, which balances the trip.
What should I wear for Holi?
Old cotton clothes you can throw away, preferably white to show the colours, a scarf or cap for your hair and sunglasses. Rub coconut oil on skin and hair beforehand so colour washes out more easily. Leave jewellery and valuables at the hotel.
Can I photograph Holi in Barsana?
Yes, and many photographers come for it, but protect your gear with a rain cover and a UV filter, and carry lens cloths. A rooftop position gives the best views and some protection. Ask before close portraits, and be ready for colour to reach you.
Is Holi suitable for children?
Temple Holi in Vrindavan and the main day of colour near the hotel can be fun for older children with a guide. Lathmar Holi in Barsana is very crowded and rough, and we do not recommend it for young children. We adapt the plan for families.
What is Lathmar Holi?
Lathmar Holi is a Holi tradition in Barsana and Nandgaon. Recalling Krishna's teasing of Radha, men from Nandgaon come to Barsana and the women playfully beat them with lathis, long bamboo sticks, while the men shelter under shields. The next day the roles reverse in Nandgaon.
Why do we go to Agra after Holi?
To rest and to see the Taj Mahal. After several days of crowds and colour, ITC Mughal's gardens and spa are a welcome contrast, and Agra is only 1.5 hours from Vrindavan. It also avoids the drive back to Delhi on the main day of Holi.
Can I add Holi to a longer journey?
Yes. This journey links easily to Lucknow and Varanasi via the Agra–Lucknow Expressway, or to Rajasthan via Fatehpur Sikri. We plan the festival days first and build the rest of the trip around them. Book early, as Holi week fills hotels across Braj and Agra.
