Monsoon Goa: green paddy and rain-washed churches

Five nights in Goa's green season, July to September. Two at Taj Fort Aguada watching the storms roll in over the sea, three at Alila Diwa facing bright green paddy. Days are for rain-washed Fontainhas and Old Goa, Divar island, Chandor's mansions, long Goan lunches and the spa, at about half the winter price.

The monsoon reaches Goa in early June and stays until late September, bringing around 2,500 to 3,000 mm of rain. The beaches empty, the shacks close and the sea turns grey and wild. But the land comes alive: paddy fields turn an almost unreal green, laterite walls grow moss, rivers fill and the churches gleam white against dark skies. Goans say this is when Goa is most itself.

This journey is for travellers who like weather. We base you at two resorts that suit the season, Taj Fort Aguada for its sea views and Alila Diwa for its paddy, and plan short outings between showers. Lunches are long, spa time is generous, and rates are often half those of December.

Day by day

The journey

Day01

Arrive, to Taj Fort Aguada

Overnight: Taj Fort Aguada Resort & Spa≈ 40 km · 1 hMeals: Dinner

Your driver meets you at Dabolim with umbrellas in the car and drives across the swollen Zuari and Mandovi to Sinquerim. Taj Fort Aguada's sea-view rooms are the best seats in Goa for watching monsoon squalls roll in from the Arabian Sea. Spend the afternoon at the Jiva spa, and dine on Goan monsoon specialities such as fresh-water fish and wild greens.

Day02

Fontainhas and Old Goa in the rain

Overnight: Taj Fort Aguada Resort & Spa≈ 50 km round trip · 1 h 40 minMeals: Breakfast, Lunch

Drive to Panjim between showers and walk Fontainhas with a local guide; the painted houses are at their brightest after rain, and the lanes are almost empty of visitors. Continue to Old Goa, where the Basilica of Bom Jesus and the Se Cathedral are quiet in the monsoon, with green lawns and dark skies behind the white towers. Lunch is a long Goan meal in Panjim.

Day03

Divar island and south to Majorda

Overnight: Alila Diwa Goa, Majorda≈ 75 km in all · 2 hMeals: Breakfast

Cross the Mandovi on the Old Goa ferry to Divar, where the paddy is at its deepest green and herons stand in the flooded fields. Drive slowly around the island and up to the hilltop church at Piedade for the view over the rain-filled river. Continue south to Alila Diwa at Majorda, where the infinity pool looks over paddy fields. If you travel in late August, ask us about Divar's Bonderam festival.

Day04

Chandor and a monsoon lunch

Overnight: Alila Diwa Goa, Majorda≈ 50 km round trip · 1 h 30 minMeals: Breakfast, Lunch

Drive inland through the green Salcete countryside to Chandor, where Braganza House is quiet in the monsoon and the family or caretakers have more time to talk. Continue to Loutolim for a second mansion by appointment, then a long lunch of Goan home cooking in a family house or a local restaurant: perhaps a monsoon fish curry, tisreo clams and sannas. The afternoon is for the spa.

Day05

A day of rain and rest

Overnight: Alila Diwa Goa, MajordaMeals: Breakfast, Dinner

A free day at Alila Diwa. Swim in the pool as the rain moves across the paddy, take a long spa treatment, or read on the verandah. If the weather clears, walk on Majorda beach to watch the monsoon surf, keeping well back from the water. In the evening, a farewell dinner at the resort with a menu of Goan dishes.

Day06

Depart from Dabolim

≈ 15 km · 20 minMeals: Breakfast

A last breakfast, then your driver takes you to Dabolim, only 20 minutes from Majorda, a useful margin when monsoon weather delays flights. We monitor your flight and keep your room available if a delay is announced.

Questions travellers ask

Good to know

Is it worth visiting Goa in the monsoon?

Yes, for travellers who enjoy rain, green landscapes and quiet. The countryside is at its most beautiful, rates are often half the winter level and the heritage sights are empty. It is not a beach holiday: the sea is rough and unsafe.

How much does it rain in Goa in the monsoon?

Goa receives roughly 2,500 to 3,000 mm of rain a year, almost all from June to September. July is usually the wettest month. Rain often comes in heavy bursts with bright spells between, rather than all day.

Can you swim in the sea during the monsoon?

No. The sea is rough with strong currents from June to September, and swimming is prohibited or strongly discouraged across Goa. Resort pools stay open, and the spa becomes the centre of the day.

What is open in Goa during the monsoon?

Resorts, restaurants in towns, churches, temples, museums, markets and the mansion villages. Beach shacks, water sports, boat trips and the Dudhsagar jeep track close. Many villages hold monsoon feasts such as São João in June.

Which month is best for monsoon Goa?

Late August and September offer green landscapes with lighter rain than July. July is the most dramatic but wettest. June brings São João on 24 June. We plan the journey around your preferences.

Why Taj Fort Aguada and Alila Diwa for the monsoon?

Taj Fort Aguada has sea views ideal for watching storms, and a Jiva spa. Alila Diwa faces paddy fields that turn bright green, with an infinity pool and a good spa, and is 20 minutes from Dabolim.

Is Goa safe in the monsoon?

Yes, with sensible care. Avoid the sea, waterfalls in spate and flooded roads. Our drivers know the routes and adjust plans to the weather. Pack quick-drying clothes and shoes with grip.

Can we see São João on this journey?

Yes, if you travel around 24 June. We would add a day in north Goa for the Siolim boat parade and the well-jumping in the villages. Expect heavy rain and very cheerful crowds.

How much cheaper is Goa in the monsoon?

Resort rates in July and August are often around half the December level, and this journey starts from about ₹1,10,000 per person, twin sharing. Some resorts add monsoon offers with spa credits or meals.
