Where to honeymoon in India this winter

By Tales of Luxury Travel Desk · 15 September 2026

For a winter honeymoon in India, choose Udaipur for palaces and lake views, the Kerala backwaters for slow days on the water, or a Goa villa for privacy by the sea. All three are at their best from November to February. Udaipur suits couples who like history, Kerala suits those who want rest, and Goa suits those who want space.

Three places, one season

For a winter honeymoon in India, three places stand out: Udaipur in southern Rajasthan, the backwaters of Kerala around Kumarakom and Alappuzha, and the private villas and small hotels of Goa. Each is dry and warm between November and February, each is reached by a domestic flight of one to three hours from Delhi or Mumbai, and each has hotels where a couple can spend whole days without seeing a crowd. The question is less which is best and more which suits the two of you: history and grand rooms, water and stillness, or sea and privacy.

Many couples combine two of them. Udaipur and Goa work well together, since both are short flights from Mumbai, and Kerala pairs easily with a few nights on the Goa coast. We suggest at least four nights in any one place, because a honeymoon spent packing every second morning is tiring. Below we compare the three on season, nights, hotels, mood and price, and name the journey we would start from for each.

Udaipur: palaces on Lake Pichola

Udaipur is the most romantic city in Rajasthan, and winter is its best season, with days of about 24–29 °C and cool, clear evenings. The city is built around Lake Pichola, and the two hotels most couples ask about face each other across it. The Taj Lake Palace, an 18th-century marble palace covering its own island, is reached only by boat. The Oberoi Udaivilas, on the eastern shore, opened in 2002 in the Mewar style, with rooms opening onto semi-private pools and suites with private pools.

We usually split the stay: two nights on the island for the arrival by boat and a lake-facing room, then two at Udaivilas for space, the spa and a pool at the door. Days are gentle: the City Palace in the morning with a private guide, a sunset boat on Pichola, dinner on a terrace facing the water. Our Udaipur and Jawai honeymoon adds two nights at SUJÁN Jawai, a tented camp among granite hills where leopard drives run at dawn and dusk. It runs for 6 nights, from INR 4,50,000 per person.

Kerala: the backwaters at a slower pace

Kerala's backwaters are a network of lakes, canals and rivers behind the coast between Kochi and Kollam, and the shore of Vembanad Lake at Kumarakom is where we base most honeymoons. December to February is the driest and most comfortable time, with Kochi at about 23–32 °C and clear evenings on the water. Coconut Lagoon, reached only by boat, is built from old Kerala wooden houses reassembled among canals. Kumarakom Lake Resort has villas along a long winding pool and its own jetty for houseboats.

The backwaters reward doing very little. A night on a single-party houseboat is the classic experience; houseboats stop cruising at sunset by local rule, so the evening is spent moored on a quiet canal. Most couples add the tea hills of Munnar, where nights drop to about 10 °C in midwinter, and finish at Marari, a quiet beach 15 km north of Alappuzha. Our Kerala honeymoon in hills and lagoons follows this route over 9 nights, from INR 3,00,000 per person.

Goa: villas, quiet beaches and privacy

Goa in winter is sunny and dry, with Panjim at about 20–33 °C from November to February, and it is the easiest of the three to reach, with flights of about an hour from Mumbai. For a honeymoon we avoid the busiest beaches and look for privacy. In the north that means Ahilya by the Sea, a small hotel of white villas on the Nerul shore facing Fort Aguada, or a private villa in Assagao with a pool, a cook and housekeeping. In the south, Taj Exotica at Benaulim has pool villas set apart from the main building.

A villa gives you something no hotel can: a whole house to yourselves, meals when you want them and no other guests. The trade-off is that you plan your own days, which is where we help, with a driver, a Fontainhas walk and tables booked in Assagao's restaurants. Christmas and New Year villa rentals usually require a minimum of five to seven nights, and prices rise sharply over those weeks; check current status before you travel. Our Goa honeymoon, split between Nerul and Benaulim, runs for 6 nights from INR 2,15,000 per person.

Udaipur, Kerala and Goa compared

The table sets the three side by side for a winter trip. Prices are the indicative starting prices of our own journeys, per person, twin sharing, at the hotels named, without flights. Udaipur costs the most per night because the Lake Palace and Udaivilas are among the most expensive hotels in India; Kerala and Goa give more nights for the same budget. Rates for all three rise over Christmas and New Year, when many hotels also set minimum stays.

How to choose between them

Think about how you like to spend a day. Couples who grow restless by a pool are usually happiest in Udaipur, where there is always a palace, a bazaar or a boat for the afternoon. Couples who want to recover from a wedding often choose Kerala, where the days are shaped by water and the evenings are quiet. Goa suits those who want sun and freedom, and it is the easiest to add as a short coda to a longer trip.

  • Choose Udaipur for grand rooms, a sense of history and short, easy sightseeing between long lunches.
  • Choose Kerala to rest, read and be on the water, with Ayurveda treatments and cool tea hills close by.
  • Choose Goa for a beach, a private house and the freedom to plan nothing at all.
  • Choose two with ten nights or more: Udaipur then Goa, or Kerala then Goa, each linked by a short flight.

When to book and what to ask for

Winter is peak season in all three places, and the rooms that matter most sell first. Lake-facing rooms at the Taj Lake Palace book out months ahead for October to March, pool villas at Taj Exotica and Kumarakom go early for December and January, and Ahilya by the Sea has very few rooms. We suggest confirming six to nine months ahead for travel between mid-December and mid-January, and three to four months ahead for November or February.

When you enquire, tell us your dates, how many nights you have and which of the three moods appeals. We will suggest the right room category in each hotel rather than the cheapest one, because on a honeymoon the room is half the experience. Tell the hotels you are on honeymoon too; they often prepare small touches, though these are never guaranteed.

If you have a fixed budget, say so early. A shorter stay at the Lake Palace with more nights at Udaivilas, or a Kerala route with one night fewer in the hills, can bring the price down without losing what matters. We would rather plan around a number than show you the most expensive version first.

Questions travellers ask

Good to know

Which is the best place in India for a honeymoon in December?

Udaipur, the Kerala backwaters and Goa are all at their best in December, with dry weather and warm days. Udaipur suits couples who want palaces and lake views, Kerala suits those who want rest on the water, and Goa suits those who want a beach and privacy. December is also the most expensive month, so book six to nine months ahead for the best rooms.

Is the Taj Lake Palace or The Oberoi Udaivilas better for a honeymoon?

Both are excellent, and we often suggest splitting the stay. The Taj Lake Palace is the more romantic arrival, on its own island and reached only by boat, and its lake-facing rooms are the ones to book. Udaivilas has more space, a fine spa and rooms with semi-private or private pools. Two nights at each is a good balance for a four-night stay.

Is a Kerala houseboat good for a honeymoon?

Yes, for one night. A single-party premium houseboat gives you a private crew, all meals on board and a quiet mooring for the evening, since houseboats stop cruising at sunset by local rule. Most couples find one night enough and spend the rest of their backwater stay at a lakeside resort such as Coconut Lagoon or Kumarakom Lake Resort.

Should we book a villa or a hotel in Goa for our honeymoon?

Choose a villa if you want a whole house to yourselves, meals cooked when you want them and no other guests. Choose a hotel if you want a spa, a restaurant and someone else handling the details. Small hotels such as Ahilya by the Sea sit between the two. Over Christmas and New Year, villas usually need a minimum stay of five to seven nights.

How many nights do we need for a honeymoon in India?

Six to ten nights works well. Six nights suits one place, such as Udaipur with two nights at Jawai, or a Goa stay split between two hotels. Nine or ten nights allows Kerala's hills, backwaters and beach, or a pairing of Udaipur and Goa linked by a short flight. Allow at least four nights in each place so the trip feels unhurried.
