Shigmo
Phalgun month (lunar calendar), usually March, over about two weeks

Shigmo is older than Carnival and more rooted in the villages. It begins with Dhakto Shigmo and Vhadlo Shigmo, small and large festivals, in which village groups carry flags, play the dhol and tasha drums and perform folk dances such as ghode modni, a horse dance, and fugdi. Rituals vary from village to village and are best seen with a guide who knows the families.
In the towns, the festival takes the form of float parades, organised by the state on rotating days. Floats depict scenes from the Ramayana and Mahabharata and local legends, with painted figures several metres high, and troupes of drummers and dancers move between them. The Panjim and Ponda parades are among the largest.
We like Shigmo because it shows the Hindu side of Goa that beach visitors rarely see. A morning at a village temple near Ponda, followed by an evening parade, gives you both halves of the festival.
How to do it well
- Parade dates rotate between towns and are announced late; check current status before you travel.
- March afternoons are hot, so plan the evening parade and rest before it.
- Ask before photographing village rituals; most families are happy to agree.
Questions travellers ask
Good to know
When is Shigmo celebrated in Goa?
Shigmo falls in the Hindu month of Phalgun, around Holi, usually in March. Village celebrations begin first, and the town float parades are held over about two weeks, each town on a different day. Dates follow the lunar calendar, so check current status before you travel.
How is Shigmo different from the Goa Carnival?
Carnival is Catholic, Portuguese in origin and held before Lent. Shigmo is Hindu, older, and tied to spring and Holi, with folk dances, temple rituals and floats showing scenes from the epics. Carnival feels like a street party; Shigmo feels like a village festival that has come to town.
Where are the biggest Shigmo parades?
Panjim, Ponda, Mapusa, Margao and Vasco hold the main float parades, each on a different day in the festival fortnight. Ponda, in the temple heartland, is often the most traditional. We plan your days so you see one town parade and one village celebration.
Is Shigmo a good time to visit Goa?
Yes, if you do not mind March heat of 30 to 33 °C. The beaches are quieter than in winter, rates are lower, and the festival adds something most visitors miss. Plan outings for mornings and evenings and keep the afternoons free.
