Ways to make the journey
2.5–3 h
The national highway west is a busy, four-lane road. For a Sangam sunrise, leave Varanasi at about 5 am in winter. During the Magh Mela, roads near the Sangam close on main bathing days, so the final stretch may be on foot or by shuttle. Check current status before you travel.
2 h
Frequent trains, including the Vande Bharat, run between Varanasi and Prayagraj Junction in about 2 hours. A car is needed at Prayagraj for the Sangam and sights. Fog can delay winter trains.

Questions travellers ask
Good to know
Can I do a day trip from Varanasi to Prayagraj?
Yes. Leave Varanasi early, take a boat to the Sangam, visit Anand Bhavan and Khusro Bagh, and return in the late afternoon. It is a long day of about 5 to 6 hours on the road, but worthwhile, especially in Magh Mela season.
How long is the drive from Varanasi to Prayagraj?
About 2.5 to 3 hours for 120 km on the national highway. During the Magh Mela, and especially on main bathing days, traffic and road closures near the Sangam can add considerable time. We plan departure times around the day's bathing schedule.
Is the train from Varanasi to Prayagraj good?
Yes, several fast trains, including the Vande Bharat, take about 2 hours. They are comfortable in air-conditioned classes. You still need a car at Prayagraj, which we arrange. In winter, fog can delay trains, so the car is often more reliable.
What is Bhadohi known for?
Bhadohi, about halfway between Varanasi and Prayagraj, is India's best-known centre for hand-knotted and hand-tufted carpets, which carry a Geographical Indication. A short visit to a weaving workshop shows how carpets are knotted on vertical looms. Workshops can ship carpets abroad with insurance.
