Ways to make the journey
2–3 days
From Leh, the Srinagar highway runs west via Lamayuru and Fotu La to Kargil, about 215 km. From Kargil, the road climbs the Suru valley past Sankoo and Parkachik, with views of Nun and Kun, to Rangdum, then crosses Pensi La at 4,400 m to Padum, about 235 km. We overnight at Lamayuru and Rangdum. Parts are unpaved and slow.
1–2 days from Manali
A road from Darcha in Lahaul over Shinku La to Padum has opened to light vehicles in recent seasons. It makes a Manali to Zanskar route possible, and Leh to Padum via the Manali highway in long stages. Conditions and openings vary. Check current status before you travel. We confirm before planning.
Under construction
A road from Nimmu along the Zanskar gorge to Padum is being built and may eventually cut the drive to a single day. Some sections may open to visitors in coming years. Check current status before you travel. Until then, the Kargil route remains the reliable way in. Check with us.
