Ways to make the journey
6–7 h
The usual route follows the Indus upstream from Leh past Thiksey and Karu to Upshi, then through the gorge to Chumathang and its hot springs. At Mahe bridge it leaves the Indus and climbs past Sumdo and Kiagar Tso to Korzok. The road is paved for most of the way. We carry a picnic and stop at Chumathang.
7.5–8 h
The alternative route crosses Taglang La, at 5,328 m, on the Manali highway, then turns off at Debring to Tso Kar and the Puga valley before reaching Korzok. It is longer and partly unpaved, but passes the salt lake and good wildlife country. Most guests use it for the return to Leh.

Questions travellers ask
Good to know
How far is Tso Moriri from Leh?
Korzok is about 220 km from Leh via Chumathang, taking six to seven hours. The route via Tso Kar is about 240 km and eight hours. We usually take the Chumathang road out and return via Tso Kar for variety.
Is the road to Tso Moriri good?
The Indus valley road to Mahe is mostly well paved, and the final section to Korzok is generally good. The Tso Kar route has unpaved stretches through the Puga valley. Check current status before you travel. Carry snacks and water.
Can we visit Tso Moriri as a day trip?
It is possible but exhausting, with 12–14 hours of driving. We recommend at least one night at the lake, or a night at a lower camp near Chumathang if altitude is a concern. Altitude makes the night demanding. Plan at least one night.
Do we need a permit for Tso Moriri?
Yes. Permits are checked on the road. Foreigners need a Protected Area Permit, and Indian nationals have needed an Inner Line Permit or online registration. Check current status before you travel. We arrange it in Leh. Copies are checked on the road.
