Fort Kochi to Munnar

Ways to make the journey
4–4.5 h
The usual route leaves Kochi via Aluva or Muvattupuzha to Kothamangalam, then climbs through Neriamangalam, Adimali and the first tea estates near Pallivasal. The last 50 km are winding hill road with many hairpins. We stop at Cheeyappara and Valara waterfalls, which are fullest after the monsoon, and at a spice garden for tea. Leave Fort Kochi by 9 am to reach Munnar for a late lunch.
3.5 h
If you land at Cochin International Airport, you can drive straight to Munnar without going into the city, about 110 km and 3.5 hours. This saves an hour and suits morning arrivals. Late-evening arrivals should spend the first night near the airport or in Fort Kochi rather than climbing the ghat road in the dark.
4.5–5 h
There is no railway to Munnar. Guests arriving by train can take a service to Aluva, close to the airport, and continue by car for about 3.5 hours. This only makes sense if you are coming from elsewhere in India by rail.

Questions travellers ask
Good to know
How long does it take to drive from Kochi to Munnar?
About 4 to 4.5 hours from Fort Kochi for 130 km, and about 3.5 hours from Cochin International Airport for 110 km, with short stops. Traffic leaving Kochi and slow trucks on the hill section can add time. In the monsoon, allow extra time for rain and occasional landslides.
Is the Kochi to Munnar road safe?
Yes. It is a well-surfaced two-lane highway with many hairpins on the final climb. Our drivers know it well and avoid driving after dark. During very heavy monsoon rain, landslides can briefly close sections; we follow local advisories and adjust timings.
What is there to see on the way to Munnar?
Cheeyappara and Valara waterfalls by the road near Adimali, spice gardens selling cardamom and pepper, and the first tea estates at Pallivasal. Birders can detour to Thattekad bird sanctuary near Kothamangalam, which adds about two hours. Each stop adds about 20 to 30 minutes.
Can I take a bus or train from Kochi to Munnar?
There is no train. Government and private buses run from Ernakulam to Munnar in about 4.5 to 5 hours, but they are crowded on the hill road. For comfort and the freedom to stop, a private car with a driver is far better.
