From Dirang the road climbs through fir forest and yak pastures towards the Sela range. In good weather we take the old road over Sela Pass for the lake and prayer flags; otherwise the tunnel carries you through in minutes. The descent passes Jaswantgarh and Jang before the final climb to Tawang.

How long does it take from Dirang to Tawang?
About 4.5 to 5 hours for 135 km, plus stops. The Sela Tunnel saves about an hour compared with the old pass road and keeps the route open in winter. Snow or landslides can still cause delays.

Yes. The Sela Tunnel opened in March 2024 and carries traffic between Dirang and Tawang in all seasons. The old road over the pass is still used in fair weather for sightseeing. Check current status before you travel.

The old pass road can close after heavy snow from December to March, but the tunnel now keeps the route between Dirang and Tawang open in most weather. Snowy conditions may still slow driving.
