Ways to make the journey
25 min
We avoid the crowded Calangute and Baga roads and take the inland route through Saligao, past the Gothic-revival Mãe de Deus church, and the palm-lined roads of Parra to Assagao. Anjuna is a further 10 minutes on toward the sea. Roads are narrow in the villages and busy with scooters in the evening, so a careful driver matters.
1 h
For keen cyclists, the inland roads through Saligao and Parra make a pleasant ride of about 12 km in the early morning, with a support car following. It is not suitable in the midday heat or after dark, when traffic increases.
25–40 min
Local taxis can be booked through your hotel or villa, at fixed fares by distance. Availability is patchy in the evenings in December. A private car and driver for the whole stay is simpler and safer for dinners in Assagao.
Worth a stop
- Mãe de Deus church, Saligao
- The palm avenue at Parra
- Mapusa market on Fridays, a short detour
Questions travellers ask
Good to know
How far is Assagao from Candolim?
About 12 km, roughly 25 minutes by car on the inland roads through Saligao and Parra. Avoiding Calangute and Baga saves time in the season, especially in the evening.
Can you stay in Candolim and eat in Assagao?
Yes, many of our guests do. Assagao's restaurants are 25 minutes from the Taj resorts at Sinquerim and from Ahilya by the Sea at Nerul. Keep a driver for the evening rather than relying on taxis.
Is it safe to drive at night in north Goa?
With a professional driver, yes. Village roads are narrow and unlit in places, with scooters and wandering cattle. We do not recommend self-driving or riding scooters at night. Our drivers know the back roads and the quieter routes.
What is worth seeing between Candolim and Assagao?
The white Mãe de Deus church at Saligao, the palm-lined road at Parra, the old houses in both villages and, on Fridays, the Mapusa market, about 10 minutes off the route.
