The reclining Buddha of the Mahaparinirvana Temple

The Mahaparinirvana Temple is a white building with a curved roof, rebuilt in 1956. Inside, on a stone platform, lies the reclining Buddha: about 6 m long, carved from red Chunar sandstone in the 5th century and found by archaeologists in 1876. He lies on his right side, head to the north, in the posture of his final moments.
Pilgrims bring lengths of saffron and gold cloth to drape over the statue, so much of it is covered. Visitors sit on the floor around the platform in silence, and monks lead chanting at times. Your guide explains the Buddha's last days, his final words to his disciples and the meaning of parinirvana.
Behind the temple stands the Nirvana stupa, a large brick dome rebuilt in the 20th century over an ancient core. The gardens around it are planted with sal trees, a reminder of the twin sal trees under which the Buddha lay. Late afternoon and dawn are the calmest times.
