Monsoon Palace and the Aravalli at sunset

A drive through the Sajjangarh wildlife sanctuary to the hilltop Monsoon Palace, built in the 1880s, for the widest view over Udaipur's lakes and the Aravalli hills as the sun sets.

Maharana Sajjan Singh began Sajjangarh in 1884 on a hill about 5 km west of the city, to watch the monsoon clouds and as an observatory. He died young and the palace was never fully finished as planned, but its position on the ridge, at around 940 m, makes it the best viewpoint in Udaipur. The hill is inside the Sajjangarh wildlife sanctuary.

We drive up in the late afternoon through the sanctuary, where you may see deer, peafowl and wild boar on the slopes. From the palace terraces you look down over Fateh Sagar and Lake Pichola to the city, and west across ridge after ridge of the Aravalli. In the monsoon and just after, the hills are green and clouds move across the view.

The site closes soon after sunset, so we time the drive to arrive about an hour before. On the way down, a stop at Fateh Sagar lake for tea by the water rounds off the evening. Access rules for vehicles in the sanctuary change, so check current status before you travel.

Questions travellers ask

Good to know

Is the Monsoon Palace worth visiting

For the view, yes. The palace interior is plain and partly unfinished, but the panorama over the lakes, the city and the Aravalli at sunset is the widest in Udaipur. Combine it with the boat on another evening, as both are best at the same hour.

How do you get to the Monsoon Palace

By car from the city, about 20 minutes to the sanctuary gate, then up the hill road. Private cars or permitted vehicles take you to the top depending on current rules, which change. Check current status before you travel. We arrange the transfer as part of the day.

When is the best time to visit the Monsoon Palace

The last hour before sunset, from August to March. In the monsoon and just after, the hills are green and the clouds dramatic. In winter the air is clearer for long views. Summer afternoons are hot and hazy. The site closes soon after sunset, so we time the drive to arrive about an hour before. Access rules for vehicles change; check current status before you travel.
