Sukh Mahal and the lakes of Bundi
Jait Sagar lies in a valley just north of Bundi, surrounded by hills. On its shore stands Sukh Mahal, a small summer palace built in the 18th century, where Rudyard Kipling stayed in the late 19th century. Kipling's time in Bundi is often linked with his writing, and a small museum at Sukh Mahal recalls it.
In the early morning the lake is calm, with herons, egrets and kingfishers on the shore, and lotus in season. The hills reflect in the water, and local people come to bathe and wash. It is the quietest place in Bundi and a good contrast to the palace and stepwells.
On the way back, we stop at the Chaurasi Khambon ki Chhatri, a cenotaph with 84 pillars built in the 17th century, and the Kshar Bagh gardens with royal cenotaphs. Opening times vary, so check current status before you travel.
