A day in the Talle Valley forests

Talle Valley lies east of Ziro at higher elevation, a sanctuary of subtropical and temperate forest with silver fir, bamboo thickets, rhododendrons and many orchids. It is home to clouded leopard, Himalayan black bear and a rich bird life, though large mammals are rarely seen. The forest feels remote and old, with few visitors.
Access requires permission from the forest department in Ziro, which we arrange in advance. The road is rough and best managed in a 4x4, and the final approach is on foot with a local guide who knows the paths. Walks range from a few hours on forest trails to longer treks, and we tailor the route to your fitness.
Conditions depend on season and weather. From October to April the trails are drier, though nights at altitude are cold. In the monsoon, leeches, landslides and mud make it difficult. Bring a packed lunch, layers and good walking shoes. We confirm current access before planning.

Good to know
How do I visit Talle Valley Wildlife Sanctuary?
With permission from the forest department in Ziro and a local guide. The sanctuary is about 30 km from Ziro on a rough road best suited to a 4x4, followed by walking. Access depends on weather and road conditions, so check current status before you travel.
What can I see in Talle Valley?
High forests of fir, bamboo and rhododendron, many orchids and a rich bird life. Clouded leopards, black bears and other mammals live there but are rarely seen. The forest itself, quiet and little visited, is the main experience.
Is Talle Valley suitable for older travellers?
Only for those who are fit and comfortable on rough roads and uneven trails. The drive is bumpy and the walks can be steep and muddy. Less active travellers will enjoy the Apatani villages and paddy walks around Ziro more.
