Tawang Monastery was founded in 1680–81 by Merak Lama Lodre Gyatso, in accordance with the wishes of the fifth Dalai Lama, and belongs to the Gelug school. Its full name is Galden Namgey Lhatse, and its walls enclose a small town of monks' quarters, schools and halls on a spur above the Tawang Chu. It is the largest monastery in India.

We arrive at about 6:30 am, when the monks gather in the dukhang, the assembly hall. Visitors sit quietly at the side as the chanting begins, deep and rhythmic, with horns and drums at intervals and young monks bringing butter tea along the rows. The hall holds a gilded statue of the Buddha about 8 m tall and walls painted with protector deities.

Afterwards your guide shows you the library, which holds old texts including copies of the Kangyur, and the museum of thangkas, masks, costumes and ritual objects. The view from the courtyard over the valley at morning light is one of the finest in Arunachal. Dress warmly and modestly, and follow the monks' guidance on photography.
