Man and Merak, villages on the shore

Beyond Spangmik the road follows the south shore of Pangong for about 30 km past Man to Merak. The lake is wider here, and the ranges across the water feel closer to Tibet. In the morning, before the wind rises, the surface reflects the mountains; later, it turns choppy and deep blue. Few visitors drive this far. The road is quiet, and you may meet only herders and their animals on the way.
Man and Merak are small villages of stone houses, barley fields and grazing land. Families keep yaks, sheep and pashmina goats, moving some animals to higher pastures in summer. With your guide, you can visit a home for butter tea, see how the household manages so far from any town, and walk briefly among the fields. A small gift of tea or fruit is welcome. Ask before taking photographs. Children often come to say hello.
Several camps have opened at Man and Merak in recent years, and some guests prefer to stay here for the quiet. The road continues south from Merak towards Chushul and Hanle, which allows a journey along the lake into the Changthang if permits allow. Check current status before you travel. Allow half a day for the round trip. Carry water and snacks, as there are few shops beyond Spangmik. Return by lunchtime.
Questions travellers ask
Good to know
How far is Merak from Spangmik?
Merak is about 30 km beyond Spangmik along the south shore of the lake, around an hour by road. Man is roughly halfway. The road is mostly paved now, though sections can be rough after snowmelt. It is an easy morning outing before driving back to Leh or on towards Hanle.
Do we need extra permits for Man and Merak?
The standard Pangong permit has generally covered Man and Merak, and in recent years the onward road via Chushul to Hanle has also been opened with the right permit. Rules are set by the authorities and change with the security situation. We confirm before issuing permits. Check current status before you travel.
Is it better to stay at Merak than Spangmik?
Merak is quieter and further from day-trippers, with wider lake views. Spangmik has more camp choices and a shorter drive back to Leh. If you continue to Hanle, Merak makes sense. If you return to Leh, Spangmik is more practical. We choose based on your route and the best camp available.
