Thirunelli temple and the Tholpetty forest

Thirunelli lies in the north of Wayanad, close to the Karnataka border, in a valley ringed by the forested Brahmagiri hills. The road from Mananthavady passes through the Tholpetty range of the wildlife sanctuary, where elephants, gaur and deer are often seen at dawn. The temple is one of the oldest Vishnu shrines in Kerala, mentioned in early sources, with a granite courtyard and an unusual stone aqueduct carrying water from the hills.
A short walk from the temple, the Papanasini stream flows from the forest. Hindu pilgrims come here to perform rites for their dead, as at Varkala and other sacred sites, believing the water washes away sins. The atmosphere is quiet and serious. Only Hindus may enter the inner temple, with a dress code; other visitors can see the exterior and walk to the stream with a guide.
On the way back, we can stop for a jeep safari in the Tholpetty range if slots are available, and visit a coffee estate. The forest roads are closed at night. The Brahmagiri hills above Thirunelli have trekking routes that require forest permission and are sometimes closed. Check current status before you travel.
Questions travellers ask
Good to know
Can non-Hindus visit Thirunelli temple?
Non-Hindus are usually not allowed into the inner temple, as at most traditional Kerala temples, and a dress code applies. Visitors of all faiths can see the exterior and walk to the Papanasini stream. Check current status before you travel and follow your guide's advice on site.
How far is Thirunelli from Kalpetta?
About 65 km, roughly 2 hours by car via Mananthavady. From Mananthavady it is about 30 km through the Tholpetty forest. We leave early to arrive in the morning, which is also the best time for wildlife on the forest road.
Can we combine Thirunelli with Tholpetty safari?
Yes. The Tholpetty range of the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary is on the road to Thirunelli, and forest department jeep safaris run in the morning and afternoon when the range is open. Slots are limited, and the range can close in the dry season. Check current status before you travel.
