Morning cycle through Mararikulam's lanes

An easy guided ride of 10–15 km on flat village lanes inland from Marari beach, past palm groves, paddy fields, temple ponds, churches and coir works, with stops to meet villagers and taste fresh coconut water.

The land behind Marari beach is flat, shaded and laced with narrow lanes, ideal for cycling. We leave the resort at about 6.30 am on well-maintained bicycles with a local guide. The route winds through coconut groves where families tap toddy and dry copra, past small Hindu temples and Christian chapels, and along the edges of paddy fields and lagoons where herons stand in the shallows.

We stop often: at a temple pond where villagers bathe in the morning, at a coir spinning shed, at a tea stall for sweet milky tea, and at a home where coconut water is cut fresh from the tree. The guide explains the ways in which Hindu, Christian and Muslim communities have lived side by side on this coast, and how fishing and coconut farming support the village economy.

The ride covers 10–15 km at a gentle pace with no hills, and we return before the heat of the day. Helmets are provided, and a support car can follow for anyone who wants to stop. The route can be shortened for children or extended for keen cyclists. Wear light clothing that covers the shoulders.

Questions travellers ask

Good to know

How difficult is the Marari cycle ride?

Easy. The route is completely flat on quiet village lanes, 10–15 km at a relaxed pace with many stops. Anyone who can ride a bicycle comfortably can manage it. A support vehicle can follow, and we can shorten the route for children or less confident riders.

Are children's bikes available?

Yes, on request. We arrange children's bicycles and helmets in advance, and child seats for very young children. For families, we usually plan a shorter loop of about 8 km with more stops, ending at the beach. Tell us your children's heights when booking.

What should we wear for cycling?

Light, breathable clothing that covers your shoulders and knees, as you pass through traditional villages and religious sites. Closed shoes or sturdy sandals, sunscreen and a hat for after 8 am. We provide helmets and water. Carry a light scarf for temple stops.
