A Ladakh honeymoon

Eight unhurried nights for couples: The Zen Ladakh in Leh, Lchang Nang Retreat in Nubra, a lake-facing tent at Pangong for sunset and stars, and two final nights at Chamba Camp Thiksey below the monastery. Private dinners, late starts where possible and the best rooms we can find.

Ladakh makes an unusual honeymoon, and a memorable one: huge landscapes, clear skies, quiet monasteries and the sense of being far from everything. The challenge is to keep it romantic at altitude, where long drives and cold nights can test anyone. This journey solves that with a slow pace, short stays in the remote places and the most comfortable rooms in each. Every stay is chosen for couples. Plans stay flexible.

You begin with three easy nights at The Zen Ladakh, then cross Khardung La to Lchang Nang in Nubra for two nights among trees and fields. A single night at Pangong gives sunset, stars and dawn on the lake. The journey ends with two nights at Chamba Camp Thiksey, with dawn prayers at the monastery a short walk away and a private dinner under the stars. Afternoons are mostly free.

Day by day

The journey

Day01

Arrive in Leh and rest

Overnight: Leh≈ 4 km · 15 minMeals: Lunch, Dinner

Your guide meets you at Leh airport and drives you to The Zen Ladakh, where we request a room on an upper floor facing the mountains. The day is for rest: lunch, a long sleep and plenty of water. Celebrations with wine are best left until the fourth night. A quiet dinner at the hotel. If you arrive on an early flight, your room may not be ready at once; the hotel will serve tea and breakfast while it is prepared, and you can rest in the lounge.

Day02

Old town and Shanti Stupa

Overnight: Leh≈ 20 km · 45 min in totalMeals: Breakfast, Dinner

A slow morning walk through Leh's old town, with a stop at a bakery and a cafe. After lunch and a rest, drive up to Shanti Stupa for the last hour of light over the palace, the old town and the Stok range. Dinner at a restaurant in town, chosen for its view and its quiet corner tables. The old town walk takes about two hours at an easy pace. Keep a warm layer for the stupa at sunset.

Day03

Stok Palace and Thiksey

Overnight: Leh≈ 60 km · 2 h in totalMeals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

A late breakfast, then Stok Palace, home of Ladakh's former royal family, with its museum of ornaments and thangkas. Lunch in a village garden in Stok. In the late afternoon, drive to Thiksey for the golden light on the monastery and the view down the Indus from the roof. The palace museum displays royal thangkas and the queen's perak headdress. The village lunch is cooked by a Stok family. Thiksey's roof gives the finest view down the Indus.

Day04

Over Khardung La to Nubra

Overnight: Sumur≈ 150 km · 5.5 hMeals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Leave Leh by 8 am for Khardung La, at 5,359 m. Photographs among the prayer flags, then down into the Nubra valley. Lunch near Khalsar and on to Lchang Nang Retreat in Sumur. An afternoon in the garden, with the mountains all around. The drive takes about five and a half hours with stops. Keep stops at the top of the pass short. In the evening, dinner is served in the retreat's dining room, and Nubra is lower and warmer than Leh, so sleep is easier.

Day05

Diskit and the dunes

Overnight: Sumur≈ 70 km · 2 h in totalMeals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

A slow morning, then Diskit monastery and the 32 m Maitreya above the valley. Lunch at Lchang Nang and a long rest. In the late afternoon, walk on the Hunder dunes at golden hour, away from the busier camel area, with a flask of tea. Dinner at the retreat. Diskit's prayers begin at about 7 am, but there is no need to rush. Bring a warm layer for the dunes, as Nubra cools quickly after sunset.

Day06

The Shyok road to Pangong

Overnight: Pangong≈ 165 km · 6 hMeals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Follow the Shyok east through Agham to Durbuk and Tangtse, then on to the lake. Settle into the best lake-facing tent available at Spangmik or Merak. Sunset on the shore, with blankets and hot drinks, then stars after dinner. Skip alcohol tonight; it is the highest night of the trip, at 4,225 m. Leave by 7.30 am, before the streams rise. Lunch is in Tangtse. Ask for the most private tent position.

Day07

Dawn at the lake, on to Thiksey

Overnight: Thiksey≈ 155 km · 5 hMeals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Dawn walk along the shore when the lake is still. After breakfast, drive back over Chang La, at 5,360 m, stopping at Chemrey monastery on its hill. Arrive at Chamba Camp Thiksey in the afternoon, with the monastery above your tent. A long hot shower and a quiet evening. The drive takes about five hours with stops. Chemrey's steps are steep, so take them slowly. The camp staff will have tea ready on arrival.

Day08

Thiksey prayers and Hemis

Overnight: Thiksey≈ 60 km · 1.5 h in totalMeals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Walk up to Thiksey for morning prayers, returning to camp for breakfast. Late morning at Hemis monastery and its museum, then back to camp for lunch and a lazy afternoon. In the evening, a private dinner set up for the two of you, with lanterns and blankets under the stars. Thiksey is a short walk from your tent. The Hemis museum deserves an hour. Dress warmly for dinner outdoors. Ask for blankets.

Day09

Fly home from Leh

≈ 20 km · 30 minMeals: Breakfast

A final breakfast at Chamba Camp and transfer to Leh airport, 30 minutes away, for your morning flight. Your guide sees you through check-in. If time allows, a last look at the monastery from the camp. Morning departures are the norm at Leh because afternoon winds make flying difficult, so we plan an early start and carry a packed breakfast if needed. Keep warm layers and any medicines in your hand luggage.

Questions travellers ask

Good to know

Is Ladakh good for a honeymoon?

Yes, for couples who love landscapes, quiet and a little adventure. It is not a beach or spa holiday, and the altitude asks for a slow start. With the right stays and pace, it is one of the most memorable honeymoons in India.

Which is the most romantic stay in Ladakh?

Chamba Camp Thiksey, with its spacious tents below the monastery, and Lchang Nang in Nubra, set among trees, are our favourites for couples. A lake-facing tent at Pangong gives the most dramatic single night. Stok Palace suits couples who love history.

Can we drink alcohol in Ladakh?

Yes, but not in the first days. Alcohol worsens altitude sickness and disturbs sleep. We suggest none for the first three nights and on the night at Pangong. Save the celebration for Nubra and Chamba Camp. Leh's better hotels serve wine.

Do we need permits for this journey?

Yes, for Nubra and Pangong. Foreigners need a Protected Area Permit, and Indian nationals have needed an Inner Line Permit or online registration. Check current status before you travel. We arrange them in Leh while you rest, so there is nothing for you to do.

When is the best time for a Ladakh honeymoon?

June and September are ideal, with warm days, clear skies and fewer visitors than July and August. Many Indian weddings are in winter, when Ladakh is very cold and most stays closed; a summer honeymoon is far better. October is lovely but cold.

Can we add a spa or wellness stay?

Ladakh has limited spa facilities. Some Leh hotels offer massages. For a spa-focused end to your honeymoon, consider adding a few nights in Kerala or Goa, which we also plan. Several of our guests end a Ladakh honeymoon with a week of rest by the sea.

Can you arrange special surprises?

Yes. We can arrange a private dinner, flowers, a cake, a photographer for an hour or a special excursion. Tell us what you would like, and we will make it happen discreetly. Just let us know at least a week ahead.

What does the journey cost?

From ₹3,30,000 per person, twin sharing, including the stays named, private car, guide, permits, a private dinner and the meals listed. Flights are extra. The private dinner at Chamba Camp is included. Single travellers, festival dates and peak weeks in July and August cost more, and we confirm the exact price once your dates and rooms are fixed.

Is this journey too tiring for a honeymoon?

It is paced gently, with late starts on most days and only two longer drives. Altitude makes everyone a little tired at first, which is why we keep the first three days easy. Afternoons are mostly free for rest or a walk together.
