Tigers and swamp deer at Dudhwa

Six nights in north India's quietest tiger country: four at Dudhwa National Park on the Nepal border, with up to seven safaris for tigers, rhinos and swamp deer, a morning at Kishanpur's Jhadi Tal and a Tharu village visit, and a night at Taj Mahal Lucknow on either side.

Dudhwa is wilder and far less visited than the famous tiger parks of central India. Its sal forests and tall terai grasslands along the Nepal border hold tigers, leopards, reintroduced one-horned rhinos and large herds of swamp deer, and on many drives you meet no other vehicle. Sightings take patience, which is why we give it four nights.

There are no luxury lodges at Dudhwa, and we say so plainly. We use the forest department's rest houses inside the park or the best simple lodge near Palia, with a good naturalist and a well-kept vehicle, and add comfort with nights at Taj Mahal Lucknow at each end. The park opens around 15 November and closes around 15 June; March to May gives the best tiger chances.

Day by day

The journey

Day01

Arrive in Lucknow

Overnight: Lucknow≈ 15 km · 30–45 minMeals: Dinner

Your driver meets you at Lucknow airport and takes you to Taj Mahal Lucknow in Gomti Nagar. After lunch and a rest, take a late-afternoon drive to the Bara Imambara and Rumi Darwaza, or simply relax at the hotel. Your naturalist joins you for dinner to talk about Dudhwa, its animals and the plan for the coming days.

Day02

North to Dudhwa

Overnight: Dudhwa≈ 235 km · 5 hMeals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Leave Lucknow at 8 am and drive north through Sitapur and Lakhimpur Kheri, stopping at the unusual Frog Temple at Oel on the way. The last stretch passes sugarcane fields and villages to Palia and the park. Check in to your forest rest house or lodge, have lunch, and set out on your first afternoon safari through the sal forest, listening for alarm calls as the light fades.

Day03

Morning and afternoon safaris

Overnight: DudhwaMeals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Two drives into the park. At dawn, mist lies over the grassland and the forest tracks hold fresh pug marks from the night. Your naturalist reads the tracks and the calls of chital, sambar and langurs, and waits at waterholes. Between drives, rest at the lodge. The afternoon drive explores a different sector, with chances of tiger, leopard, sloth bear and many birds.

Day04

Swamp deer at Kishanpur

Overnight: Dudhwa≈ 4 h round tripMeals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

An early start for Kishanpur Wildlife Sanctuary, part of the Dudhwa Tiger Reserve, with a packed breakfast. Around the lake of Jhadi Tal, hundreds of swamp deer graze on open grassland, with storks, ducks and, if fortune allows, a tiger at the water's edge. Return to Dudhwa for lunch. In the afternoon, visit a Tharu village near the park to see houses, crafts and village life.

Day05

Rhinos and a final day in the park

Overnight: DudhwaMeals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

The morning focuses on the rhino areas, where one-horned rhinos reintroduced in 1984 graze in wet grassland. How they can be viewed depends on that season's forest department rules, which your naturalist confirms. The afternoon drive returns to the sectors with the best recent tiger signs. A final evening at the lodge, with stories from the day.

Day06

Back to Lucknow

Overnight: Lucknow≈ 235 km · 5 hMeals: Breakfast, Dinner

An optional last dawn drive, then breakfast and the drive back to Lucknow, arriving mid-afternoon. Check in at Taj Mahal Lucknow and enjoy a long bath and a rest. In the evening, a short food walk in Aminabad for galouti kebabs, or an Awadhi dinner at the hotel to close the journey.

Day07

Departure from Lucknow

≈ 15 km · 30–45 minMeals: Breakfast

After breakfast, transfer to Lucknow airport for your onward flight. Guests continuing to Agra or Varanasi can drive on, about 5 hours to Agra on the expressway or 5.5 to 6 hours to Varanasi.

Questions travellers ask

Good to know

Will we see a tiger at Dudhwa?

There is a reasonable chance over seven drives between March and May, but no guarantee. Dudhwa's tall grass and dense sal forest make tigers harder to see than in parks like Ranthambhore. Swamp deer, rhinos, elephants, birds and the quiet of the forest make the journey rewarding either way.

When is the best time to visit Dudhwa?

March to May for tigers, as grass is burned back and animals visit water, though May is hot. November to February is cooler, with large swamp deer herds and migrant birds. The park is closed from about mid-June to mid-November.

What are the lodges like at Dudhwa?

Simple. The forest department's rest houses and huts inside the park are well placed and clean but basic, and private lodges near Palia are similar. There is no luxury lodge. We add nights at Taj Mahal Lucknow at each end for comfort.

Is Dudhwa suitable for families?

Yes, for children used to early starts and long drives, usually from about eight. The variety of animals keeps interest high. Families should be comfortable with simple rooms and food. We adapt safari numbers to suit younger travellers. Afternoons between safaris are kept free for rest.

How do we get to Dudhwa?

Fly to Lucknow and drive about 235 km north, around 5 hours, via Sitapur and Lakhimpur Kheri. Trains are slow and there is no nearby airport with regular flights. We break the journey with a night in Lucknow on each side.

Can we see rhinos at Dudhwa?

One-horned rhinos live in fenced rehabilitation areas within the park. How visitors can view them depends on the forest department's rules each season, and access is sometimes restricted. Your naturalist confirms the options; check current status before you travel. Swamp deer and wetland birds are common in the same areas.

What should we pack for Dudhwa?

Muted clothing in greens and browns, a warm jacket, hat and gloves for winter dawns, light cotton and a sun hat for April and May, binoculars, insect repellent, a torch and any medicines. A dust cover for cameras helps on dry tracks.

Can we combine Dudhwa with the Taj Mahal?

Yes. Lucknow is about 5 hours from Agra on the expressway, so a journey can start in Agra, continue to Lucknow and Dudhwa, and end in Lucknow. Our family journey combines the Taj Mahal and Dudhwa in eight nights. That journey suits families with children of about eight and older.

How many safaris are included?

Up to seven: one on arrival afternoon, two on each full day, and an optional dawn drive on departure, with the Kishanpur excursion replacing one. Numbers can be adjusted. Permits are limited, so we book as early as possible. Extra drives can be added if permits are available.
