Ranthambore safari zones and how to book

By Tales of Luxury Travel Desk

Ranthambore safaris run twice a day in 10 zones, in six-seat jeeps or 20-seat canters, with permits sold by the Rajasthan forest department by date, shift and zone. Book as soon as your dates are fixed, plan four or five drives, and visit between October and June.

How Ranthambore safaris work

Every safari in Ranthambore National Park is run within a system controlled by the Rajasthan forest department. Vehicles enter the park twice a day, in a morning and an afternoon shift, each lasting about three to three and a half hours. Each vehicle is assigned to one zone and must follow that zone's routes. You cannot change zones once inside, and you cannot drive off-route.

There are two vehicle types. The gypsy is an open six-seat jeep, quieter and more flexible, and the best choice for photography and for families. The canter is an open truck seating about 20, cheaper and easier to book but noisier and less agile. Both carry a forest department guide, and luxury lodges add their own naturalist where permitted.

Permits are tied to each passenger's name and ID, and checked at the gate. They are sold online through the official forest department system for a specific date, shift, zone and vehicle type. Lodges and specialist operators help with bookings, but no one can sell a seat outside that system. Check current status of the rules before you travel, as they change from season to season.

The 10 zones

The park is divided into 10 zones. Zones 1 to 5 cover the original core around the fort and the three main lakes, Padam Talao, Rajbagh Talao and Malik Talao. These are the classic Ranthambore landscapes, with ruins beside water and open grassland, and they have historically produced the most tiger sightings. Zones 6 to 10 were added later and lie on the edges of the reserve. They are quieter and can also be excellent, depending on which tigers hold territory there.

Tiger territories shift every year as animals age, breed and die, so the best zone changes. Zones 3 and 4, around the lakes, have long been the most requested, and they sell out first. We follow recent sightings with the naturalists we work with, but zones are allocated when you book, not on the day, so flexibility helps.

Booking permits step by step

The forest department opens bookings well ahead of each date, and popular zones in the main season sell out within days or weeks. The steps below are how we approach it for our guests. Rules, fees and booking windows change, so check current status before you travel.

  • Fix your travel dates and number of nights in Ranthambore
  • Send us full names, ages, nationalities and ID or passport numbers for every traveller
  • We apply for jeep permits for each shift as soon as booking opens
  • If jeeps are sold out for a shift, we book a canter or a different zone and keep checking
  • Carry the same ID you booked with; it is checked at the gate
  • Pay any camera fees at the entry point, where charged

Timings and seasons

Safari times move with sunrise and sunset. In winter, the morning shift starts around 7 am and the afternoon shift ends around sunset at 5.30 pm. In summer, mornings start earlier, around 6 am, and afternoons run later, until about 6.30 pm. Exact times are set by the forest department for each season.

The main zones, 1 to 5, close from 1 July to 30 September for the monsoon. Some outer zones may stay open in those months, depending on the year. October to February is the coolest season, with green forest and good sightings, though early mornings in an open vehicle can be 5–8 °C. March to June is hot, above 40 °C by May, but the best time for tigers, as they stay near water.

How many safaris you need

A single safari gives you a chance of a tiger, but a small one. Over four or five drives, most of our guests see at least one, and many see several. That is why we recommend three nights in Ranthambore: an afternoon drive on arrival, two drives on each full day, and a morning drive before departure if needed.

It also helps to enjoy the drives for more than tigers. Ranthambore has leopards in the hillier zones, sloth bears, striped hyenas, marsh crocodiles in the lakes, sambar, chital and more than 300 bird species recorded. The ruins, banyan trees and lakes are beautiful in themselves. Guests who arrive hoping only for a tiger are more often disappointed than those who come for the forest.

  • Two nights: three drives, a fair chance
  • Three nights: four or five drives, our recommendation
  • Four nights or more: for photographers and repeat visitors

A typical three-night stay

Most of our guests arrive from Jaipur, either by the morning train to Sawai Madhopur, which takes about two hours, or by car in about three and a half hours. Arriving by lunchtime means the first safari can be that afternoon. You meet your naturalist, check your permits and leave the lodge about half an hour before the shift begins.

The second and third days follow the same pattern: an early wake-up call with tea and biscuits, the morning drive in cool light, then a late breakfast at the lodge. The middle of the day is for rest, the pool or a visit to Ranthambore Fort and the Ganesh temple, which can be reached by road through the park without a safari permit, subject to current rules. The Dastkar craft project and Surwal Lake, good for winter birds, are other options between drives.

Afternoon drives return at dusk, and evenings at the lodges are spent by a fire, often with the naturalists sharing what they saw. On the last morning, a final drive before breakfast and the journey on to Jaipur, Bundi or Udaipur. This rhythm gives four or five drives without feeling rushed, and leaves time to enjoy the lodge, which is part of the reason to stay at a good one.

Where to stay

The Oberoi Vanyavilas, near the park road, is the most polished option year round, with large tents in gardens and naturalists on site. SUJÁN Sher Bagh and Aman-i-Khás are smaller tented camps with excellent guiding; both are seasonal and close in summer. Six Senses Fort Barwara, a restored fort about 30 km north, suits guests who want wellness and a palace setting between drives. The Taj Sawai Madhopur Lodge, a former royal hunting lodge, is a comfortable heritage choice. Check current status of seasonal openings before you travel.

Etiquette and what to bring

Keep voices low, stay seated and never ask the driver to go closer to an animal than the guide allows. Do not feed animals or throw anything from the vehicle. If a tiger is seen, vehicles queue; patience gets better sightings than pressure. Wear neutral colours, bring a warm jacket in winter and a scarf for dust in every season, and pack binoculars and a zoom lens. Single-use plastic is restricted in the park, so carry a refillable bottle.

Questions travellers ask

Good to know

How do I book a Ranthambore safari

Through the Rajasthan forest department's official online system, for a specific date, shift, zone and vehicle type, with ID details for each passenger. Lodges and operators can help. Book as soon as dates are fixed; check current status of the rules before you travel.

Which Ranthambore zone is best for tigers

Zones 1 to 5, especially 3 and 4 around the lakes, have historically been best. Tiger territories change each year, so the best zone varies. Zones are fixed at booking and cannot be changed on the day. Zones 3 and 4 hold Padam Talao, Rajbagh Talao and Malik Talao, with ruins beside water, and they sell out first. We follow recent sightings with our naturalists before applying.

Jeep or canter in Ranthambore

A six-seat jeep is quieter, more flexible and better for photography. A canter seats about 20 and is cheaper and easier to book. We book jeeps wherever permits allow. Jeeps also suit families best. Both vehicles are open and carry a forest department guide. If jeeps are sold out for a shift, we book a canter or a different zone and keep checking for jeep permits.

How long is a Ranthambore safari

About three to three and a half hours, in a morning or afternoon shift. Exact start and end times change with the season and are set by the forest department. In winter, mornings start around 7 am and afternoons end around sunset at 5.30 pm. In summer, mornings start near 6 am and afternoons run until about 6.30 pm. Check current status before you travel.

Is Ranthambore open in the monsoon

The main zones, 1 to 5, close from 1 July to 30 September. Some outer zones may stay open, depending on the year. The seasonal camps, such as SUJÁN Sher Bagh and Aman-i-Khás, also close in summer. For tigers, we plan Ranthambore between October and June, when the core zones around the lakes are open. Check current status before you travel.

Can I choose my zone on the day

No. Zones are allocated when permits are booked and cannot be changed at the gate. Flexibility on dates and shifts improves your chances of the more popular zones. Permits are tied to each passenger's name and ID, and you cannot change zones once inside the park. We apply for each shift as soon as booking opens, and if a zone is sold out, we book another and keep checking.

How many safaris should I do

Four or five over three nights gives a fair chance of seeing a tiger. Two or three drives are possible on a short stay, with lower odds. Our usual pattern is an afternoon drive on arrival, two drives on each full day and a morning drive before departure if needed. Four nights or more suit photographers and repeat visitors, who want time for leopards, sloth bears and birds too.

Do children need ID for Ranthambore safaris

Rules on IDs and ages for children are set by the forest department and change. Send us details for every traveller, including children, when booking. Permits are tied to each passenger's name and ID and are checked at the gate, so carry the same ID you booked with. A six-seat jeep suits families best, and each drive lasts about three hours. Check current status before you travel.

What is the best month for tiger sightings

April to June, when tigers stay near water, though temperatures pass 40 °C. March is a good compromise. November to February is cooler with good sightings. In the hot months we book the first morning shift, which starts around 6 am. Winter mornings in an open vehicle can be 5 to 8 °C, so bring a warm jacket. The main zones close from 1 July to 30 September; check current status before you travel.
