Shad Suk Mynsiem
April, over three days (dates set each year)

Shad Suk Mynsiem means the dance of the joyful heart, and it is one of the most important festivals of the Khasi people. It gives thanks for the harvest and welcomes spring and the sowing season. The main celebration is organised by the Seng Khasi, a cultural and religious organisation of the indigenous Khasi faith, at the Weiking ground in Shillong.
The dance follows a distinctive pattern. Unmarried women, dressed in silk with gold and silver crowns and heavy jewellery, dance slowly in the inner circle with eyes lowered, symbolising modesty and fertility. Men, in turbans and dhotis, carrying swords and whisks, dance in a wider outer circle, protecting them. Musicians play drums and the tangmuri, a Khasi pipe.
The festival is open to visitors and is one of the best chances to see Khasi tradition in its formal dress. It falls in the warm, pleasant days of April, before the heavy monsoon. We combine it with Shillong and Sohra, arranging a place to watch with a guide who can explain the dance's meaning.
How to do it well
