Buddha Jayanti at Lumbini
Apr–May, on the full moon of Baisakh (lunar calendar)

Buddha Jayanti, also known as Buddha Purnima, falls on the full moon of the Nepali month of Baisakh, usually in late April or May. It commemorates the Buddha's birth at Lumbini, as well as his enlightenment and death. At Lumbini, the day begins early at the Maya Devi Temple, which shelters the marker stone identifying the birthplace, and around the Ashoka Pillar and the sacred Puskarini pond.
Monasteries in the monastic zone, built by Buddhist countries and communities from Myanmar, Thailand, Sri Lanka, China, Japan, Korea, Vietnam, Germany and others, hold their own prayers and ceremonies, so a walk or a cycle-rickshaw ride along the canal reveals many traditions in a single day. Processions carry images of the Buddha, and the evening brings butter lamps and chanting. In Kathmandu, Swayambhunath and Boudhanath also draw large crowds.
The difficulty is the heat. Lumbini lies in the Terai at about 100 m, and late April and May temperatures often exceed 38 °C. We plan the visit for dawn and evening, rest in the middle of the day, and keep the stay to one or two nights. For travellers who want a quieter Lumbini, the cooler months from October to March are better, but on Buddha Jayanti the site is at its most alive.
How to do it well
- Arrive at the Maya Devi Temple at dawn, before the heat and the largest crowds.
- Carry water, a hat and a light scarf; shoes are removed inside the temple.
- In Kathmandu, Swayambhunath and Boudhanath hold their own full-moon celebrations the same day.
Questions travellers ask
Good to know
When is Buddha Jayanti at Lumbini?
Buddha Jayanti falls on the full moon of Baisakh, usually in late April or May, following the lunar calendar. It is a public holiday in Nepal and the busiest day of the year at Lumbini. Dates change annually and some traditions mark the day differently, so check current status before you travel and we will plan your nights around the celebration.
How hot is Lumbini during Buddha Jayanti?
Very hot. Lumbini lies in the Terai at about 100 m, and late April and May temperatures often rise above 38 °C by early afternoon. We visit the Maya Devi Temple and the monastic zone at dawn and in the evening, rest in an air-conditioned room through the middle of the day, and use electric carts or cycle-rickshaws rather than walking long distances.
Is Buddha Jayanti also celebrated in Kathmandu?
Yes. Swayambhunath and Boudhanath in Kathmandu hold large celebrations, with monks, butter lamps, processions and pilgrims circling the stupas from early morning. If you cannot reach Lumbini, a dawn visit to Swayambhunath and an evening kora at Boudhanath give a strong sense of the day. Both are close to Dwarika's Hotel.
How do I get to Lumbini for Buddha Jayanti?
Fly from Kathmandu to Gautam Buddha International Airport at Bhairahawa, about 35 minutes, and drive about 22 km, roughly 40 minutes, to Lumbini. Flights and the limited good hotels fill quickly around Buddha Jayanti, so book early. By road from Chitwan it is about 165 km, around 4.5 hours, which suits a combined jungle and pilgrimage journey.
